Ensomtblad
Named "lone blade" in the language of Bjornland by their first king Halvar Leifson. This is one of the most legendary weapons in the history of that land. It is blessed by the gods of the Aesir-- one of the few items not made by the dwarf first-born to receive that honor.
AppearanceĀ
Unlike most legendary weapons, Ensomtblad is a very plain-looking weapon. It is a simple broadsword spiderwebbed by light scratches and deep gouges from lifetimes of battle. Despite this extensive use, it still holds a keen edge unlike almost any other blade in the mortal plane.History
Originally, this legendary weapon was little more than the simple warrior's blade it appears to be. It was the property of Leif Odason, a simple, unimportant warrior of the Jondrakr clan. The sword was simply the best weapon he could get his hands on, never would he even consider it worth passing on to the next generation.
This changed when the orcs came to the hall of Clan Jondrakr. They put every man, woman and child in the clan to the sword. As the battle raged, Leif found his son, put the weapon into his son's hands and bade him to run. As much as the young boy wanted to fight, he did as his father asked.
No matter what manner of enchanted arms he came across, he continued to use his father's sword. He even got the weapon enchanted by a volva and gave the blade its name. By Halvar's deeds, his sword became just as legendary as the man, himself did even despite its plain appearance.
After Halvar's death, when his soul was collected by Odin, himself, he took his sword with him. From then on, the weapon changed hands from one champion to the next. Since that time, Ensomtblad had been seen as a blessing from the Aesir, themselves.
Significance
Ensomtblad is a weapon touched by the gods of Asgard. This puts it in almost the same category as the weapons of the gods, such as Thor's hammer Mjolnir or Odin's spear Gungnir. In some ways, it is even more significant, however because this is a weapon born of mortal hands, meant for mortal hands.
Due to its history as the weapon of the first king of Bjornland, it has been associated with the kings and queens of the Bear Throne. Many champions that are gifted the weapon are not monarchs of Bjornland, but that association hasn't been shaken. Many wielders of Ensomtblad are elected to the throne if at all possible.
An Epic Weapon Old Scandinavian sagas are downright filled with legendary weapons. My personal favorite is the thrice-cursed Tyrfing, grandpappy of all cursed swords. Always pay for your commissions, ladies and gentlemen. But I digress. Ensomtblad is not one of these. I wanted to create the feel of such a weapon-- one that could belong to sagas solely belonging to the people of Bjornland.
