Xagolae
Xagolae is the soldier state of the The Acronian Sea, renowned throughout for their warrior culture and militant politics, and woe be to her enemies. The saving grace of most of her foes is that Xagolae is very rarely at war with one country at a time, and thus never has a change to focus her resources on just one enemy. A number of smaller states have been spared by this trend. Situated on Crablack, the desert island, few outsiders have reason to invade, and Xagolae uses her export revenue and war spoils to pursue her expeditions in the name of glory.
The Stratocracy claims all of Crablack under her flag, but in reality only the west is truly under her governance. The rest of the island lies in barbarous anarchy, ruled only by tribal warrior chiefs and ravaged by blood feuds. Most foreign states would shun such a place, but the island is rich in oil and coal, and the Orcs have had a cultural history of whaling, in addition to Crablacks geographic position directly south of the whales’ migration route, all of which allow them a tight grip on a number of rare markets.
Xagolans value honor and strength, and citizens under the direct control of the state are conscripted into obligatory service at a young age for a four year term. Those who remain in the service have a chance to move up the ranks, gaining political power as they go. Most denizens live in tribal like societies, scattered amongst the desert and clumped around oases and resource deposits. Power is typically held until a coup establishes a new reign, and generals vie for power often.
