What happens when you die?

After a sentient creature dies, they will sit in Limbo until Death shows up to talk to them and check their respawn amount. If they have respawns left, she will ask if they want to respawn or pass on to the Afterlife.

Who has respawns?

All sentient creatures that have the capacity to make nuanced choices have the chance for respawns.
The highest recorded natural amount was three chances to respawn, which is an extreme rarity.
Most sentient creatures have two chances to respawn if they choose to use them, leading to three lives total.

How do you know how many respawns you have?

The number of respawns is tracked between a creature's fingers: a straight line in stark contrast to their skin tone (either pitch black or startling white), one line for each respawn left.

What uses up a respawn?

An easier question to answer is "what doesn't use up a respawn?" The answer is: dying of old age and bodily failure, essentially. Most causes of death that were sparked by a conscious decision (either by the creature that died or another) use up a respawn. The decision might not be made when thinking of consequences but will use a respawn regardless.

Can I avoid using respawns?

Yes, but only by using Totems of Undying to immediately resurrect the creature holding it the instant it is killed. Otherwise, there is no way to avoid using up respawns upon death. There is, of course, a way to steal respawns that The Glitch alone can manipulate, but this has incredible consequences and will make an enemy of Death and her followers.
