Magic Surge Rules

Wild Magic

In the world of CNNF, magic is inherently wild and unpredictable, although this fact often eludes the general populace. Mages have honed their skills to manipulate magic by adhering to strict rituals and employing precise incantations. However, those who lack proper training or skill, and attempt to harness these magical forces expose themselves to a myriad of capricious and haphazard side effects. Consequently, the Magic Surge table holds significant importance in CNNF. It not only governs the actions of wild-magic sorcerers but also determines the outcome when adventurers employ certain enchanted items they come across. A prevalent curse within this realm is that whenever a caster engages in spellcasting, they are compelled to consult this table for a corresponding result.

CNNF "Wild Magic" Rule

Instead of a flat 5% chance of Wild Magic Surges occurring when spells are cast, roll d20 and subtract the level of the spell. If the result is 1 or less, a Wild Magic Surge occurs. This increases 1st level spells from 5% to 10%, increasing the odds by 5% each level.

How to Use the Table

Roll a d100 and a d20 to determine which of the three columns you’re going to use. 1-3 (15%) is the first column (extreme), 4-10 (35%) is the middle column (moderate), and 11-20 (50%) is the third column (nuisance).   A close review of the possible results will reveal that most of the effects in the original PHB table appear in this table as well. However, most of the results are new and this table has undergone moderate playtesting in my groups.

Magic Sure Table

Unless the Surge effect says so, your spell continues as normal. These effects are on top of the spell being casted.
