The Newid Byd
From the Journal of Captain Torren, Circa 27 GWA
Captain's Log, 27th of Mayyat, Day 115 of our Journey I could hardly believe me eyes. I had heard stories, but to see the the Newid Byd for meself is terrifying. I can't imagine she be a good omen... Ever since she happened, the crew be quiet and solemn. Most stand pale, unsure what to make of the event. I'm trying to get 'em moving and to stay occupied, but I fear tonight shall be long. This day was meant to be the last day of ar voyage. Sometime in late morn we had seen Perival off in the distance. Ye could see the excitement in the lads faces. To finally be able to go ashore for a time brought sheer joy. As we got closer in ar approach ye could see something were wrong, very wrong. Smoke was rising from ar destined town of Gilfort. Not a sirens breath later did the water become choppy. I looked through me farseer to see what was going on... I don't know if I imagined it, but I swear ye could hear the screams oh the people as they scrambled between ruined building. It was then that I saw the earth shake, clearly not being the first that this had happened ashore. Men, lady-sort, and young blood all alike scrambled fer the departing vessels. Then an audible gasp rang from me crew as er'yone saw the nearby clyffs crumble into the sea. It would be one thing if it were not, but a quake of the earth. However, she kept going, then almost all at once... The land, she... I don't even know what to call it. It were almost as if ye were watching some giant predator swallowing their prey. The land were swallowed by the sea at an unnatural rate. Everything seemed to get pulled down below the waves. As the land went, she seemed to craft a pull. We watched in horr' as ships be pulled down with the current. A current that began to pull on ar ship. We jumped to action, turning the Grand Duchess about, but we was pulled in very quickly. I felt me boat rock as it does, down and up as I saw it in the distance. The land were gone with a large collision of water that leapt high into the sky. A minute later, the sound of it reached the ship. A resounding, thundering crash and clap that pierced yer ears and shook ye right to the core. It were deafening. Me entire crew covered their ears, including meself. Then the Duchess were raised once more high above the normal level o' the sea, before dropping quickly. I believed it were the end fer us. I thought we would disappear below the waves as well. Yet, she calmed soon after. I knew in that moment that the Newid Byd had taken another victim. Maps would need to be redrawn as Perival were no more.Although called many different things by many different shorts, the common tongue would refer to it as the Newid Byd. That is it they would reference it at all. To see the Newid Byd is an ominous omen. One that hasn't been commonplace ever since the end of the great war. These days it hails as something akin to myth. Perhaps is myth in some places. Yet to those who have seen it... It is a horror, or wonder, that will stay with them all their days. The Newid Byd is categorized my a sudden massive shift of the world. Lands geting raised out of or pulled down into the sea, whole countries appearing or disappearing in but a few moments. Yet, there is an even more rare form of the Newid Byd. When a land, or portion there of gets raised into or dropped out of the sky. No one knows how it happens or what holds it up there. To many it is only a rumour. They would be wrong. From the works of Zorra Duskwood, famous bard hailing from the kingdom of Myrr
There I sat, my feet o'er it all
The end of the world, I did not want to fall
Like king myself, I watched the land below
Then the earth it shook and a seed of fear did sow.
I watch on in horr'
As in the earth a crack oh it did appear
I swear were you there you would have seen my tear
For what I saw next, well, it shook my to my core.
Now I know you won't believe me, hell I wouldn't either.
To truly believe it true, you'd really have to see her.
For with a grind, crack, and shake I was given quite a fright.
To watch the kingdom of Myrr raise into the air
Well I could not believe my sight.
If you don't believe me, go look, it's still there.
