The Sea's Birth
The Orphan Sea was not always the great body of water it is today. Instead, it used to be a massive basin full of forests and meadows along with its own rivers and lakes. A people lived there, hunting the wildlife and farming the land, but soon their way of life would be washed away.
Ironically, the birth of the Orphan Sea began with a drought. This drought was not the first the people living there had dealt with, but it was the first drought for many of the younger generations. Worried that this would spell the end of their people, a group of them made a plan to bring the water back. In those days Runic was known by everyone, and one of the most commonly mastered runes was that of water. Armed with this rune and the determination of youth, the group set out to create a massive version of it to end the drought, many times larger than any rune made before. After weeks of backbreaking work with shovels, the rune was carved into the earth. As they all channeled power into it their efforts were rewarded, and soon enough clouds began to form and rain fell.
The rain poured for days, beginning as just a faint shower but growing in strength over time as the great rune's power demanded it to. While the people were happy at first, thinking they were seeing the end of the drought, their feelings soon changed as the sudden rainfall in the dry environment caused severe flash floods. Rivers overflowed and meadows and forests began to drown. The people were forced to evacuate their homes by the riverbanks and head for higher ground to escape. Soon this evacuation turned in to a mass exodus as it became clear the rain was not stopping anytime soon, and that it was only getting stronger.
After many weeks, and the loss of much life, the rain ceased. Where the great basin once sat, now lay a lake larger than anything thought possible. The people that survived settled down on the edges of the lake, where they eventually became the Selon of today.
