Wall Signs

When traveling through the caves that the Kerato call home, strangers may easily find themselves hopelessly lost in the ever twisting tunnels. Even torches only offer so much help when the next pathway looks exactly like the last. Outsiders often wonder how the Kerato are able to so quickly and consistently navigate through them without even bothering with a light source. The secret stems from their unique biology. Their horns are bioluminescent, emitting a steady stream of ultraviolet light. This light reacts causes certain materials to release additional light. The Kerato have taken advantage of this, harvesting the exoskeletons of the creatures they breed for food and crushing them up into a powder. They then take this powder and mix it with water to create a type of paint that glows when exposed to the light of their horns. This paint is then used to mark symbols that can only be seen in the presence of a Kerato along cave walls to guide them and warn them of dangerous areas. The Kerato even have an entire profession dedicated to exploring unknown areas and creating wall signs to guide future travelers. While nothing but endless stone tunnels to an outsider, the Kerato travels surrounded by the beautiful glowing lights of their own creation.

Purpose

Wall signs are how the Kerato navigate the tunnels and caves they call home. Painted onto the walls of cave systems with a special paint, these signs describe what lies down the many branching pathways, allowing the Kerato to accurately find or avoid certain locations. Examples include pointing to civilization, pointing to the surface, warning of Shikari hunting grounds or other dangerous cave-dwellers, etc.
