Gammaeus

Basic Information

Anatomy

Merfolk possessing a homonid torso and crustacean abdomen/tail.  Arms are asymmetric, with one being a larger, less dextrous grabbing claw and the other being better suited for fine manipulation.  Hands are two fingers and a thumb.  The majority of Gammaens have the claw on their right side (80%) with the remainder being left-arm clawed.  The tail has tentacles for fine swimming control on its underside which are also used for movement on land.

Genetics and Reproduction

The species is sequentially hermaphroditic, with only one breeding female in any given spawning bed.  A breeding female's fertility is based on the size and needs of the community, driven by the hormonal load in the communal waters.  Large, stable communities will generate relatively few newborns, while those under duress will be much more active.  Those that are allowed to fertilize eggs present as male, all others present as androgynous, male, or female based on personal preference.  Eggs are laid in banks and fertilized externally.  In extremis, where no suitable spawning grounds are available, those Makras that are soldier-specialized will have the eggs encrusted on their abdomen where they will be protected until they spawn.  Gestation period is roughly 40 weeks.

Ecology and Habitats

Shallow and deep salt water.  Skin must be kept wet with salt water as the salt suppresses bacteriological infection.  Can breather either air or water.

Highly chemically sensitive, conducts a great deal of communication using scent and pheromones when immersed in water.

Special Abilities

  • Amphibious - Can breathe underwater without penalty and never suffer movement penalties for traveling under water.
  • Regeneration - Whenever a character heals wounds due to rest (not magical healing or Medicine checks), they heal one additional wound. Can regrow lost limbs, but takes 1 month per limb.
