Anticipated Weakness

Dr. Lionel Benton Collection Significance

The wedding gown is one of a kind. It is made of needle lace. Entirely thread by hand with a needle and thread. It is the most time-consuming and intricate type of lace to make; also the most expensive. The fabric is dyed with a rare yellow gambege that turns black when it is brought into contact with human skin. Gambege is tree cultivated in the Blasmouth bogs. Its scat fumes are noxious, but tailors and seamstresses who use the material have lost their sense of smell over the past few hundred years and no longer realize the odor is a deterent. Long term wear results in gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, and even death.
18th Century Wedding Gown History

The wedding dress was worn by, Esme Ivans, the daughter of a wealthy Silk Road trader. The moment it was unveiled to her by Duke Benton’s dressmaker, she knew it would be her cage. During her marriage ceremony in the presence of the Blasmouth, Otherwhere Village, she wore a veil so thick the congregation could not see the gown’s black stain running down her cheeks. Even in her sickness and frailty, her husband was adamant that she put on the dress. Fearing imprisonment in a mental institution, she ignored any offer to escape.   During that time, the duke's mistress had a child. Duke Benton began residing with her. He told his mistress that he maried his repulsive wife solely for her dowry. He lacked both land and money, and recklessly spent his inheritance. He financed his lifestyle by exploiting his position, fabricating false ordinations and selling them to affluent individuals who believed they would gain membership in the Regal Order of the Light. His wife, like everyone else, had no idea that he wasn't part of the Order. At one point, his older brother was a member, but he was expelled for getting involved in dark magic, corruption, and killing. The banishment prevented the Benton siblings from joining the Order.   Less than a year after getting married, Esme passed away. She became so weak that she couldn't eat or drink. She remained motionless in her canopied bed for three months. Taking care of her no longer interested her maids. She was found three days after her demise. The onset of rigor mortis was advanced. As per her husband's request, she was to be buried without a service. That night, he wedded his mistress.

20th Century Wedding Gown History

During the Six Year War, Dr. Lionel Benton discovered the wedding dress while seeking refuge in Blasmouth. Without delay, he reached out to a cemetery worker. Despite no guarantee, Dr. Benton paid the loyal digger in full for the dress and corpse. He had a specific use for the dress.   Upon opening the grave, his disappointment grew as he realized the digger had been correct about the corpse. It wasn't worth the effort to reconstruct his great grandmother's pile of decomposed bones; nevertheless, the gown he hunted remained intact. It held the remaining bones together as if they were still whole. It was foreordained. He desired his bride to don it on her wedding day. June Farmsworth, a celebrated ballerina did not return his calls, but she would love him with the same intensity his dead soul desired.
