Melody Rice
Gazette Page 6 Newspaper Reporter & Travel Opinion Writer
Gazette Newspaper Columnist, Reviewer and Page 6 Reporter Melody Rice works the social beat in a village where there is no active society. Residents who can afford to attend the theater, political celebrations or pay for their entertainment travel by train to Newfaire. They can afford to spend the night in Newfaire and come back the next day. So Melody writes gossip columns. Some residents love being written about. Others try to avoid her. Interns and graduate students at Briarbank College Annex are friendly with Melody, but they worry about her ambitious ideas. She would very much like to replace Reed Collins. Or impress upon him the advantages of leaving Crooked Mile. For the time being, she is living at Marvel’s Boarding House. The gossip she hears from Gertrude is convenient, but no one wants to read about the town’s business in the paper when they learned it by mouth. To solve the problem of these twice-told tales, she embellishes or further investigates the motivations for dwellers. That she writes about their personal business is of no concern to Melody.

It is not expected that she will research or verify her information, but there is so little time and so much to cover. No one at the Gazette does much of either. Instead, she will concentrate on writing sensationalism and gritty-witty stories. Her chief aim is to break a story before her competitors do. Confidentiality is key to the gossip and review business, but Gazette reporters aren’t too concerned with secrets. Melody is excited about attending red carpet events, parties and premiers, interviewing with notables and wearing outfits borrowed from friends. Her plans to travel by different transportation, including motor cars, are appealing to her.
