Drury Theater singers perform three operas a week. While the uptown theaters choose to offer classic operas, the Drury Theater turns to Red Lamp District artists, playrights and musical actors for their latest works. Some residents call these "Far off Nob Hill Way."
Monday is the only night of the week the theater is closed, During afternoon the theater opera group presents a matinee. The most popular matinee is Moon Over the Midnight Pear Tree. The pear tree requires moonlight to bear fruit. Sounds sweet and tasty, but the story takes a twist when Mefistofele (yes that Mefistofele) interferes with the moon and the pear tree's relationship. *Mefistofele Annoying the Moon.
*Prop Disclaimer
The Devil's Balloon Rationale.
The prop in the video is arguably the earth. The earth is close to the earth's moon. So the Drury Theater's prop department is taking license to use the balloon = earth = moon bargain with Faust. The stage prop department is the Drury Theater's most economically disadvantaged (cheap) department. It uses whatever it can find to illustrate the story)
Mefistofele taunting the moon while eating a pear.
Moon Over the Midnight Pear Tree Backdrop
An Opera Matinee
Performed Mondays at 1:00 PM
Caution: The matinee is not a children's program (nor should it be seen by the faint of heart). Corpses and Vaesen creatures are the stars of the show. They produce, choreograph and perform all the dancing.
