Melody Rice is a Crooked Mile local, who takes her reporting position seriously. If her reviews do not appeal to readers, she asks they contact her supervisor at the Gazette News, a flighty gentleman who doesn't take her seriously. It is likely her supervisor won't bother to discuss concerns and complaints with Melody. Nothing he says seems to go through her ear and out the other. Neither does his admonition take residence inside her brain matter.

Dr. Dean Quincey was offered an opportunity to turn a barn into his clinic. He refused, citing the issues he found at infirmaries he usually worked in. He took in donations from Crooked Mile residents. His clinic was built with the help of the neighbors. So that he could handle emergencies, he moved into an upper floor apartment.   Soon after the clinic was finished, he hired interns who studied at the Briarbank College Annex. He taught the interns modern procedures. He listened to their recommendations for orderlies and nurses. When he could afford to hire a doctor full time, he planned to hire a general practitioner. They had the most experience with treating common diseases and injuries that residents came into contact with. Dr. Qincey’s foremost concern was to keep the spread of disease at a minimum.   Nurses provided bathing, dressing changes and dispensing medications. Orderlies kept the clinic clean, transporting patients by a motor ambulance (a cost Dr. Quincey thought important) and getting supplies. Common treatments provided in 19th century infirmary clinics were rest, fluids, and medication. Broken bones or infections that required surgery were not done at the clinic. He accompanied his patients to Grayslate Sanitorium for surgeries. He realized the danger of surgery that often resulted in great pain and death, regardless.   Patients who lived in Crooked Mile paid only when they could pay for treatments. A foundation was founded by members of the Circle, who were not only interested in biological causes for ill health. Dr. Quincey and the Circle were passionate about separating out the scientific from the paranormal cause of distress in Crooked Mile.
