November 2023 Week 1

Since this is the first year competing with me to write 10,000 (edit 12/18/2023) 25,000+ words for World Ember, my goal is not to disappoint myself.   My writing experience does not include a background in sorcery, the occult or magick, so I will spend this month researching origins, while I create my maps, images and structure. I am definitely not a pantser. My writing depends on the plotting and organization that I accomplish before I begin articles. Providing that I'm prepared, I plan to enjoy getting lost in the writing process.

November 2023 Week 2

Mini-Meta
I enjoy writing the meta for my worlds, and I frequently return to them when I need to reign in my design/writing. So I write more than I likely need to write. Mini-meta? Ok in summary:

Scope
The purpose for building the world is to record what Jason learns about the islands and its culture that is beyond the veil. What starts out as a spiritual question about the islands’s history turns into a harrowing allegorical odyssey that Jason, wheelchair bound, adds to his grimoire. Not to practice the dark arts, but to implode them.

Dark and terrifying the investigation though it might be, the process involves digging up ghouls. The future is never around his corner. The future is already here, because the future that is repeated with tweaks for every generation who forgets to listen, doesn’t consult the Keep’s texts, or doesn’t pay heed to intentional patterns (always scary)
— Lead NPC Jason opines

Major objectives include concentrating on the following influences, even though its structure will be established for a murder mystery (the core).
  • 1. Paranormal Influence
  • 2. Religious Influence
  • 3. Rule of Law
  • 4. Social Services
  • 5. Race Relations

The Cirsea Odyssey story is focused on what propels some humans to commit murder, and what propels others to stand by and watch the most objectionable “sin” occur without justice. The main character grapples with his own transformative decisions about poverty, weak community law, and using ‘the other" to separate and simplify disparity.
— Milo Klein, Dead NPC

Drama (w/Timelines)
It is not the norm in my worlds to include a chronicle. The stories that are written with the worlds in mind are all told by players during the same approximate time period, but the Cirsea Odyssey is a historical world of the dead, so it is appropriate to use timelines to accompany the drama.
In summary:
  • 1. 1093 BCE Isles are discovered and made lore.
  • 2. 1607 CE Religious Seekers arrive.
  • 3. 1783 CE Order of the Shadows Arrive.
  • 4. 1864 CE Garamund Island Exploration
  • 5. 1887 CE Lore & Legacy Investigators Arrive.
  • 6. July 19, 1907 Medium and Guide Transmission Begins.
Basic Category Tree (subject to edit) includes: Introduction, History, NPCs, Species, Locations, Plot, Staging, Paranormal, Religious and Cultural Influences.

November 2023 Week 3

Review and Edit World Homepage
Finished the home page "Elevator Pitch?" After reading the pulbished lessons, I decided to use following tips:
  • Stick to the world's description and what causes it's mystery. Enough of a lure to entice a reader.
  • Don't write too much. It is better to write less and add "more" optionally.
  • Use tropes, genre language and exciting fiction phrases that inspires interest in reading further.
  • Don't use jargon (unintelligible language).
  • Don't overload the page - narrow the focus.

November 2023 Week 4

Last Minute Prep
  • My scheduled plan for writing during December is to work daily from 10am - 3pm (the best times of the day for me to find alone time).
  • I've cleaned up the desktop. Later this week I will do a "scan care" so that there's less chance of a maintenance issue to fix.
  • I plan to add some additional research with the research I've done, so I'm not looking around for inspiration.
  • I do plan to publicize my "office closed hours" to family, and I've set up my no notifications during my writing hours.
  • But, and it's a big but, I not the kind of writer who can count on keeping a fixed schedule. For some reason my life doesn't function the way I want it to function, so when an unintentional impediment gets in my way, my plan is to pick up my mouse again, find the magic keys, and start writing from where I left off. I don't plan to give into deadline panic.
  • Because no matter how many words I write this is a no lose proposition. Whatever I get written is more accumulative words than I wrote when I started.

Such a wonderful way to remind me that I wrote that. That's exactly what I want to do. Enjoy the process.

Stories that keep me guessing about where the monsters are hiding. Under my bed or in my head?
