Whenever an accusation is made, or a crime has been discovered, a trial shall be held. In this trial the accuser is tasked to present evidence and the accused shall defend. These courts are generally short and harsh.
Whenever these crimes involve minor things, like petty theft, trespassing or murder of a peasant, these trials are held in citizens court led by the lord steward. If this involves serous offenses, like treason, assassination or inter hold conflict these matters are brought to the lord of the region.
Theft: Losing one or both hands or repay the stolen amount in 3 or 5-fold.
Laziness: Lashings and/or Forced Labor.
Trespassing: Lashings, Fee and/or something more severe.
Treason: Death by various means or Banishment
Murder: Death or lifelong servitude.
Insulting a Noble: Lashings, Death, losing all possession, Locked away forever or banishment.
Dabbling in Dark Magic: Death, losing limbs/tongue, torture, lashings, banishment. Punishments should be severe as they serve as a detergent for others in addition to punishment to the guilty. Fees: Fees are dependent on the accused and the crime, for a peasants these go from a few to a few dozen gold pieces, whereas a middleclass man would be charged a few dozen to a few hundred gold pieces, a aristocrat or a lord could be charged up to hundreds or thousands gold pieces.
Collecting evidence:
Whenever evidence isn’t enough to conclude a solution, punishment shall follow based on the evidence collected filled in with the decision of the judge. If this is unsatisfactory a formal investigation is launched, and all means are deployed to collect information, from magic to interrogation. If this doesn’t bring any conclusion to the table or if one side demands it, the court might result to trials of physical endurance, these include: “Trial of Fire”, “Trial of Lighting”, “Trial by combat”, “Trial by Water” and such.Treatment of the Suspect:
Suspect are generally treated as guilty until proven innocent, with all the results of such.Justice:
