Souls and Sacrifice

The basics:

A soul is the immortal essence of a being, which is transferred to the realm of the dead when a being passes away. That is unless the being has somehow forfeited their soul. A common way for this to happen in for them to have granted it as part of a fiendish pact.

Where sacrifice comes in, the price:

There is a reason cults and sacrifice are implicitly linked, this is for the simple reason that some extremely devoted devil-cults do just that and thusly send souls to their patron. This comes at a cost, of course.

• Killing someone, preferably an unwilling good soul as those are the purest (ask your local devil for details).
• Getting on the bad side of society, as sacrificial murder, especially to devils is extremely frowned upon in most circles.
• Those that conduct the sacrifice forfeit their soul to their patron but do so for a slim chance for immense power, in addition those that devote themselves to this mark themselves. These marks can be either visible or invisible, often both. But in either case these individuals will find it difficult to fit into society.
• Those that perform the sacrifice can’t originate from either the nine-hells or the abyss.

The Physical Price:

Those wishing to perform sacrifice, will have to invest heavily in ancient books, provided they can find these in the first place. As well as the outlandish and expensive materials required for performing the ritual and thusly forfeiting your soul. Dedicated robes from queer materials (human skin is an obvious choice) as well as ornate implements which feature arcane and occult symbols all help to increase the likelihood of success, being noticed and the cost of the ritual.
