A fence of wrought iron with a rusty gate encloses a rectangular plot of land behind the dilapidated church. Tightly packed gravestones shrouded by fog bear the names of souls long passed. All seems quiet. High above you, Castle Ravenloft gleams down upon you with an oppressive gaze. You hear the laughter of children up ahead.   Behind a grave stone, two little girls are playing in the dirt. They hands, faces, and cloths are stained with mud. "Hello! me and my sister were just about to play hide and seek, you wanna play with us?"
  • If the party refuses, they attack.
  • If the party accepts, they say that they are going to go hide and that the party must turn around and count to 20. They then try to single out different party members and drag them down into the ground.
     

-Laying the Burgomaster To Rest Encounter-

As the pale sun begins to rise, the clouds part just enough for a ray of sunlight to pierce the air and shine upon the late Bourgomaster's grave. As Donovich begins his prayer: Almighty Morning Lord, in you there is no darkness at all. Give us your eternal light. When we cannot see the way before us, may we continue to put our trust in you, that under your guidance and protection we may be kept from falling this day, and finally, by your mercy, enter into our rest.  Allow this soul of our beloved to traverse the mist and be welcomed into your kingdom with open arms.   Suddenly, a malicious groaning breaks his train of thought. Muffled cries fill the air around you when suddenly, hands burst forth from the ground below. A handful of the dead break free from their places of resting and glare at you with malicious eyes that glow purple. ROLL INITIATIVE!

RULES OF THE ENCOUNTER:

  • During the burial a rouge necromancer has decided to kill Ireena. The dark powers are trying to keep her from Strahd.
  • Donavich offers prayers to the Morning­lord in exchange for Kolyan Indirovich’s deliverance from Barovia but is quickly cut short when zombies & skeletons attack.
  • Zombie hands emerge from the ground to grapple the party and cause difficult terrain. Every 10' of movement prompts a DC 11 Str Save or be grappled. The hands can be attacked and destroyed.
  • The late Bourgomaster rises out of his casket as a zombie and begins attacking the party along with many other undead.
