Beigh

Beigh is a nominally inhabited system with a small total population living out of free-floating infrastructure. The system is known as a mining hub with some interesting astrological features, but the war had seen its utility as industrial support for the northern edge of the province cut off, and new potential markets are opening before it.   The local star is old, reddish and gradually expanding in both heat and size. It is theorised that it may already be starting to burn iron, and is slowly entering its death throes. The majority of permanent structures in the system are scratched-together repair yards, for-profit refineries, franchised-out commercial rest stations and a very minor naval garrison facility. There was never a real sense of community solidarity across Beigh, only small networks forming amongst the mining population and those who serve them.   There are no full-fledged planets in Beigh, only a field of oddly carboniferous iron-rich planetoids that supposedly coalesced from a thinned-out asteroid belt, and a handful of icy dwarf planets only just loitering within their star's orbit and consisting of nitrogen ice as much as water. The planetoids are the system's main draw, supporting a mining indusry that burns out ferrous materials or sifts for graphene structures in quarries so large they have already begun to dig steadily deeper, finding odd snaking caves similar to terrestrial lava tubes and laced with more valuable minerals.     Wit the end of formal hostilities in Tiatholon and the recall of most Sestian forces, Beigh lies at a crossroads. Their traditional customers are restored to them, spurred on in part by fears that the greater Terran Empire might cut off the province at any moment, and a return to normalcy is about to dawn. However trade ties formed with the Kitsune operators remain, and talk of opening relations with the barbarians beyond the Empire raises hopes of selling their high-quality materials to the entire Coalition. Split opportunities have lead to divided loyalties, and unrest simmers throughout Beigh as proponents of one opportunity clash with their rivals.   A small locally-raised system defence fleet exists and operates freely in the system - it is common knowledge that every Beigh SDF "officer" has as close ties to the pirates they are meant to deter as they do to their victims, and their own loyalties are divided. Whether the SDF protects local trade or turns coat and angles for a cut of the profits is largely up to chance.
