Voodoo Boys

The Voodoo Boys are one of the many gangs in Night City .

History

The Voodoo Boys started out as a terrorist gang of drug dealers. They engaged in weird magic rituals, and were known to deal in non-synthetic drugs to students near the University. Sadistic and pitiless, they would kill, torture, and rape for any reason or no reason at all. Victims would sometimes be warned with Chicken blood and feathers on their doorstep. Or not. Their motives and practices had little to no consistency. Mutilating and maiming victims was common, as was dissecting their body parts for rituals or to inspire terror.   Their nihilism and drug use was attractive to some university students. They were sometimes let into the gang, but they were never considered real members. The gang exploited them as cannon fodder for low level crimes, or milked them for funds from their families at home.   No outsider has ever successfully infiltrated the gang. They had no fixed headquarters or crash pads. The location and time for the next meeting was chosen at the end of each meeting. At least two high profile Medias have died while trying to cover this gang.   Despite the biosculpting, tattoos, feather implants, and bones through their noses and ears, most members of the gang started as average white boys. Most were male, though female members existed as well. The females were often much worse, as they had twice as much to prove as the males. The extremely caricatured and thoughtless version of voodoo that was practiced by the gang proved to eventually become their downfall as the growing Haitian community of Pacifica turned on them and drove them out of Night City.   In 2077, the Voodoo Boys have become an enigmatic gang from Pacifica . They aren't just netrunners devoted to uncovering the secrets of the Old Net and behind the Blackwall. They're also edgerunners: breaking every rule there is to break, and programming viruses that can freeze neural networks.   When investors abandoned the Pacifica redevelopment project, the predominantly Haitian workers they had brought in to construct it defiantly remained, turning the half-built hotels and spas into their new home. The collective known as the Voodoo Boys emerged as the community's leaders. They earned this role through their fierce resistance to attempts at eviction and their fervent devotion to their own interpretation of Haitian culture and religion. In the latter, they have replaced old notions of heaven and the supernatural with the Net's promise of eternal life and all-knowing AIs; their vodou priests are elite netrunners, masters of the digital realm able to probe its darkest secrets and wreak havoc on enemies.   They are led by Brigitte and her second in-command, Placide. They have formed a rivalry with a Boostergang known as the Animals.

Overview

A mysterious gang from Pacifica with a dark reputation for their netrunning skills and their mystical voodoo flavor. Presumed to entirely consist of members with Haitian or Dominican blood, the Voodoo Boys are are exclusive, secretive, and distrustful of outsiders. The gang was originally comprised of voodoo priests and priestesses, the prominent caste in the Creole culture of the Haitian diaspora. In 2062, climate change wiped Haiti off the face of the earth and initiated a new chapter of the Voodoo Boys' history. The gang became the self-appointed guardians of Haitian refugees' interests and safety in the Pacifica combat zone.

Though surrounded by this quasi-mystic aura and mostly absorbed in their long-term passion projects on the Net, Voodoo Boys still need to eat. So much of their day-to-day business looks like that of other gangs: carrying out hits (usually based around hacking and netrunning) for cash and enforcing sovereignty on their turf with machetes and other implements of physical violence. They do, however, have an aversion to firearms, preferring instead needles wielded by "shadows," skilled assassins with hologram skulls on their faces.
