Splinternet

WorldWideWeb is no more. It was fun while it lasted, but we tore it apart with legal battles and political retaliation. Splinternet is the fragmented global network. There are several regional networks, or splinters:
  • NoAm
  • Latam
  • Euronet
  • Central Asia, including Russia behind the kremlin firewall
  • China
  • India
  • Middle east and North Africa - Islamic net
  • Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Japan-SKorea cluster
  • Pacific cluster, including Australia and NZ
You can call, message, and access data on the same splinter via your normal network provider. Accessing something on the other splinter of the net requires a separate connection corridor. Which in turn requires buying access and making sure it's secure, and this might be legal or not. Corporations maintain their own networks and satellite connections and serve as their own network providers.   In most societies except the most free spirited, network service providers are required to turn over information on their users’ activities to the authorities. Chinese network surveillance AIs are probably capable of monitoring actions of every user and censor all the comms real time. Because of this, there are many underground, pirate, or simply personal networks. So you can pay around 10k for the benefit of normal broadcast operators not tapping your data (but your shady network fixer just might).   Hardware-wise, networks consist of optical cable backbone, repeater stations, satellites, databanks, and all the machinery needed to run them.   Cities are covered by cellular wireless networks. In the wilderness you can use satellites directly if your comm has at least 10 mile range.
