The Llaneshi are vibrantly-coloured insects of the Astral Sea. Llaneshi have a long and narrow body covered by thin carapace, typically in shifting hues of blues, greens and violet. Like the water-striding bugs of the material plane, the Llanesh glide on their four insectoid legs as if skating on the ethereal, silver winds of the plane. Most llaneshi stand two to three feet in height and weigh only a few pounds.
Behavior and Ecology
Llaneshi are docile nearly to the point of being tamed by the denizens of the Astral Sea. They pose virtually no threat to most creatures of the plane and feed upon the troublesome dream leeches of the realm, piercing the leeches with a tube-like mouthpart and disintegrating the dream eater with their unique venom. These small dream eaters are akin to the rats of human cities, and in this way, the Llaneshi are the denizens' beloved cats.
Llaneshi congregate and form their nests in the astral city of Tu'narath where the abundance of dream leeches keeps them regularly fed. Beyond the city's limits, Llaneshi form nests on the dreadnoughts which roam the endless starscape, building nests upon the dreadnought's back and drifting with it through space, not unlike remoras gathering around a colossal shark.
Adventurer's Notes
The caparace of a llanesh is far too thin and delicate to be used for armor, yet its bright colouring is nearly gem-like in its beauty and has been known to fetch handsome prices in the material plane. Moreover, trinkets, talismans and jewelry made from llanesh carapace is effective at warding off the dream leeches even when the llaneshi themselves are not present and the llaneshi venom, though difficult to collect, is spectacularly lethal against dream eaters of any size.
