The Wailing Wood
The Wailing Wood is a sprawling, haunted forest lying between the Dreadlands and The Broken Colonies. The forest floor is littered with dead leaves and beasts alike, and the howling winds carry the voices of those long dead.
Moreso than most peoples, humans live quickly and often die violently. Human souls commonly cling to the material plane, bound here by vengeance, hatred, regret or some other unfinished business. For a would-be necromancer, this forest is ideally-located--pinned between two human provinces which were, for a time, hostile toward one another and which filled its soil with the bones of dead, vengeful men. Some barons have sent excursions into the wood in vain attempts to purify the lands, but these attempts served only to feed the haunted forest with more lost souls.
The Maze of the Mother. A maze of bewitched, living plant life that vexes all who enter. The Mother is said to live at its heart, resting atop a wealth unheard of in the human provinces for centuries.
The Grove of Ancients. A site of ritualistic importance to the Woodlimb Legion of orcs.
Inhabitants
The Wailing Wood is a domain of darkness, and far from empty. Darkness has begotten further darkness--the abundance of restless spirits has drawn necromancers, which have in turn drawn to them hosts of shambling corpses, reanimated beasts and horrific golems of flesh and bone that now wander through the holt. The orcs of the Woodlimb Legion readily combat this darkness, taking the forms of owlbears, hippogriffs and hulking warrior-trees. The most influential, and most powerful creature to dwell in these woods is neither undead nor beast, the Green Mother has made her den deep within a living maze of the wailing wood and bound it with her magic; she is a dragon of age unknown, of howling fey song and intricate, foul plots.Landmarks
