Belanor Heleris

We don't talk about the Kartkash temple. If you want to work with me, you gotta have that clear. Now, let's talk about this next expedition.
— Belanor Heleris

Apparel & accessories

Belanor enjoys wearing tight formal clothes that make him look like he has more money than apparent. He tends to wear fingerless gloves and a hip belt. Nowadays, his clothes are starting to be too small for him as he grows a beer belly, yet seems to refuse changing his clothes to more fitting ones. He likes wearing jackets but always ends up taking them out and tying them in his hips.

Dark colours with red and golden are his favourite combinations, but white shirts are his preference.

Mental Characteristics

History

Since a kid, he's always loved archaeology. His father used to gift him rocks or pockets of earth or sand that he hid some small thing for Belanor to find. His mother died when he was small, but his father married not too long afterwards to a researcher who also loved to incite Belanor's love to archeology. Thankfully, his dads won enough money to send him to study archaeology.

Once he finished his studies, he had already realized he liked a bit more action than research, so he head out to make his own discoveries. But first, he had to do the so dreaded research and pay people for the expeditions. He quickly found a trace to an archaeological place that hadn't been discovered yet, and his fathers helped him find people for the expedition.

The expedition was a success. He, and the group he prepared, found the remains of an old surface dwarven town. With the success, he only got more motivated to keep doing this job, and some of the expedition team even asked to stay with him for the next one.

For a lot of years, the cycle of researching for possible archaeological sites and then exploring it, went well, and gave him good fame. Lots of people wanted to work on his expedition team and he got a lot of patrons who paid him to do more expeditions and a lot of people shared leads of possible sites with him.

One year, he found a lead to an old temple, from the old Dracolis. He found nothing about why it was forgotten and abandoned, but he made extra preparations for this expedition. He wanted a small team, but a good one, so he called in the best employees he had and a magical expert who had good fame but never worked for him.

Reaching the site was fairly easy, the research had been correctly done and the temple was where Belanor had thought. A gorgeous site that even after a millennium or so of abandonment was still mostly standing in a rough island. The team decided to make camp inside the temple before exploring it.

What happened exactly inside the temple is something neither Belanor nor the other two men that returned like to talk. They returned with low spirits, and claimed they had to do more preparations before returning to the place and reveal it to the world.

Rumours talk of Belanor trying to find fighters and battlemages to return to the temple, but the returning to the temple never arrived as Belanor claimed his research was stolen and the maps the other two men had were found burned by magic.

The two men that had returned with Belanor stopped working for expeditions, and Belanor himself stopped working for some months. He become quite the drunkard during these months, and his dads' deaths didn't help him to recover his love for archaeology. It all changed when he meet a Dragon.

The Dragon didn't stick for too long, left the next day, but gave a note to Belanor. That single note made Belanor love for his job immediately return, but directed his researches to Terrelis ruins, refusing jobs related to Dracolis.

Even though he returned to the job and recovered some of his old fame, not everyone wanted to work with him again since he still was quiet about what happened in the Kartkash temple and people didn't trust a man hiding a secret that ended up with the death of over half his expedition team.

Motivation

His whole life he's been motivated to find old things, recover things that were once forgotten, return lost things to the world. His dads helped him grow this motivation and his love of archaeology with homemade toys, travels, and plenty of books.

When he returned to his first ever expedition and found that his dads had also died, he lost all motivation for his job and, in the lowest moments, also for his life. When the mysterious Dragon came with the note, his old motivation didn't fully return, but instead went back to work out of spite, refusing to let the owner of the note think that he had destroy his life.

Relations

He loved his dads. All that they did to ensure he could pursue his dream is something he'll be eternally grateful for. He never really stops to think about his mother, who died barely months after he was born. He'll never forgive himself to not be with his dads when they died, especially since he left for the expedition knowing they were sick and old.

He took Jana Kertha to the Kartkash temple's expedition because they had worked together before and he knew she was great working with ruins and always tied the group together when there were new faces, which he knew there would be new faces and he wanted the whole team to be trusting each other.

Raku is the bane of Belanor. He looked like a great addition to the group, his fame preceded him as a great explorer with magical knowledge, and he knew the Dracolis would have a lot of magic in the ruins. Raku was the fault of the Kartkash temple's expedition going wrong and will hate him for all his life.

I feel kind of sorry for poor Belanor. No wonder he hates Raku. XD

Yeah, both have their reasons of doing things tho! Both are bad in each other stories yet doing the best they can in their stories.

A bit of a story of hubris here, huh? Belanor got so used to everything going well, he wasn't at all prepared for an expedition to go so poorly. Though in the end, he couldn't have known that's when both his dads would have passed, nor that the expedition would suffer such a fate.

Having everything going perfectly for you doesn't do good to a person. Never prepare you for the failings and they end up feeling way bigger. He did know his dads where old and sick, but it is true that he could never expect the expedition end up like that.
