The Starwild Compendium

The Starwild Compendium is the first scientific research document depicting Zean fauna, flora, culture and geography for the Dain audience.   The Compendium was penned by Iria Starwild after her historic journey. She and her crew remained on the continent for over a year, gathering a wealth of information that captain Starwild decided to gather in one tome. As she would return to Zea two more times, so did the Compendium grow two more tomes over the years.   The first edition appeared in 92 AU. Iria Stormwild, after compiling her notes from the expedition, employed several of her crew to copy the first book and by the time of her return had ten copies ready to distribute. After presenting one to the Erwy royal family and to the Voice leadership, she distributed the rest among University libraries to be further copied and released.   The first book contained several sections. First was 'The Journey', simply describing the weather, wind and sea currents that led her to Zea. Then, 'The Land of the Spider' followed, with the Nata-Got culture in focus. This was the most subjective of the sections, as the tribe leadership greeted their guests with all honors, at the same time hiding everything they needed far out ot their sight. While Iria had to know that, she still depicted them extremely favorably. Third was ' The Flora and Fauna'. This section is filled with sketches of Zean plants and animals, and was the one most distorted by the copying process. While never fully transforming animals into monsters, some copies of the Compendium skew hardly into fantastic realms. 'The Lore' gives a quick rundown of the myths and history of the three major tribes of Zea. It is a relatively short section, as the language barrier prevented some ideas from being properly conveyed. This led to 'The Language', which contained 150 Zean words and translations. Final section, 'The Curia', describes several cultural artifacts and products of Zea that were brought back from the journey.   The Compendium was soon read by (or to) thousands. The tales of the new continent reignited the desire for discovery and fueled the long runner industry. Possibly the most fascinating, if not alarmiing, was the shared knowledge of sefia, excavated and used much more abundantly on Zea than on the old continent.

I love these kinds of travel logs, it reminds me of Darwin's The Voyage of the Beagle. This may also just be the ethnography nerd in me, but I'm so curious about the "The Land of the Spider" chapter! When you say Iria depicted the Nata-Got people favorably, do you mean that in the sense that she depicted them in a fair and honest way without letting her own biases interfere, or in the sense that she strategically picked and chose what details to include to ensure they would come across well to her people?

Well, Iria is an explorer, not a journalist, so she won't be 100% objective. As the first visitor from an unknown continent, she was hosted with honors by the Nata-Got. As a result, she would describe them as 'driven businessmen' rather than 'greedy monsters'. She didn't have all the details about the caste system, but surely noticed that everyone in position of power has too many fingers. I think we should forgive some subjectivity when faced with the discovery of the century.
