Personality
A true neutral, Thal just wants to know what's out there. While she mostly thinks herself a good person, she primarily focuses on truth and science, preferring to seek out the limits of what's possible over worrying about what's ethical. Still, she tends to associate with other good daitens, and aligns her actions with their values for ease's sake.Story
Before the fall of Heaven, she was a member of an extremely specialized guild of architects, weavers sculptors, and general creatives, who made objects, structures, and machines that appeared to brim with life. In truth, these creations held a spark of life, but did not contain a true soul; they were lively and warm things, but they had no mind nor heart of their own. One of the guild's projects was to create a daiten automaton, as an experiment to discover how life-like and "real" they could achieve with their creations; this project came to be headed by Thalhassa herself, and it changed the course of her life forever. The guild had many rules; some written into the very oath all members swore, others unspoken yet equally sacrosanct; breaking any one of them could have severe consequences. Among those not explicitly stated, was the notion that a creator should not create in their own image, rather, they should strive to create something new, something that has never existed before. For years, Thalhassa applied herself to the code without complaint, but when it came time to design the daiten automaton, to create its physical features, she found herself inexplicably compelled to look inward, and to try and recreate what she saw within.
Looking at Ark, few could find even a passing resemblance between it and its creator - Thalhassa hid the parts of herself she teased into her magnum opus too well. Though the project was considered to be a great success by the guild, it was all the same just another chapter in a longer saga, and soon her peers looked to the future, to new visions, new creations. Thalhassa found she could no longer look away; Ark was all she thought about for the next few years.
In that time, he fondness for her creation only deepened. Though she loved Ark, her peers consistently reminded her, that for all its stunning likeness, it would never love her back, it was only a doll, designed to emulate, but never experience, true emotion. Yet, Thalhassa sensed a deeper personality in Ark, something she could describe as the first fragile filaments of a soul. In their time together, she availed the silent giant of her stories of youth, of her endless ideas, of the constant noise inside her head, and even the loneliness that at times circled her heart. When she spoke, she swore Ark listened.
Growing ever more ambitious, Thalhassa began to hypothesize - if a Lifebringer could treat Ark like an Idol, could Ark's soul be at last realized within that yearning body? After all, Ark was not a true daiten, just as they said, but so too were the Idols from which a Lifebringer brought new souls into the universe. Evidently, a Lifebringer could give Ark the one thing Thalhassa could not, but what obstacle remained: finding someone willing to take the plunge.
She needed to be discreet. If the guild or, really anyone caught wind of her goal, she could lose it all; her title, her respect, and everyone she cared about. Asking around was next to impossible; it was just another way word could get out about her ambitions. Instead, she privately vetted every Lifebringer in Heaven, speaking to others who knew them, carefully gauging how likely they might be to try something so beyond the known and comfortable limits of what is possible. After a year of search, she found her match - but her timing could not be worse.
Lord Qi's own creations were in disarray. Suspicion and discontent permeated the ranks of the daitens. In her desperate quest, Thalhassa remained nearly oblivious to the rising sense of dread, the ever-increasing tensions. She was so close; nothing and no one would stand in her way. Ark would soon take its first breath as a living being with a soul.
At least, that was the dream. In her imagination, the worst she could think of was failure, that her hypothesis would be proven wrong, sending her back to the drawing board. Never did she consider a fate worse than failure. Her choice of Lifebringer was a daiten who, unlike Thalhassa, saw the writing on the wall regarding the recent accusations. This offering was too good to pass up.
"Why resist? You're a smart girl - the march of progress, of power, waits for no one..." These were the words he offered her when Thalhassa returned to the Lifebringer's home, and found Ark changed, as she had begged for, but they were not alone. Gamites swarmed in the rafters, staring her down with hungry, vitriolic eyes.
