Midnight Tears
Midnight Tears is a deadly and feared poison, as a tasteless liquid that can be slipped into food and drinks leaving a slight residue behind. While not entirely unidentifiable what truly is unique about Midnight Tears is that no matter when it was ingested, the poison will not take effect until the stroke of midnight. At that time, the victim will begin to choke as their throat closes up, spitting out blood from the mouth and nose the inner lining of organs is attacked, causing internal bleeding. The delayed onset of the effects of the poison makes it very useful for assassinations and murders, as the killer could feed the victim the poison early in the day, and be far away by the time the poison strikes.
Midnight Tears is considered contraband in most lands, with particularly harsh laws in Sien for its possession. In the southern city-state of Nafsu, an alchemical license can be acquired that allows an individual the possession of Midnight Tears, where a modified, less painful form of the poison is used for euthanisation.
Knowledge on the poison, including ingredients and how to make it are strongly policed, though the major ingredient is known to be the bulb of the rare Midnight Lily, native to central Eleron. The cultivation of the Midnight Lily has also become a policed practice, to attempt and limit the amount of poison on the market. There is no known herbal cure for Midnight Tears, though restorative magic may either bring the afflicted back from the brink of death, weaken the effects of the poison on them or negate the poison entirely if caught before the stroke of midnight. However, there is no reliable way to tell if the poison is in someone's system until it strikes.
