Orlian Velorus

At first glance, Orlian was a stereotypical Demacian lower noble. His family only cared about strength, about having their children be powerful and skilled enough to join the dauntless vanguard - a feat many dream of but few accomplish. Orlian became heir because his uncle, the leader, lost all his children in combat and Orlian's own father perished in a fight against Freljordians. He was engaged to a woman his uncle had decided would help bring fortune to the family, Serine Edessa, whose family were mageseekers.   As a young boy, he had witnessed the mage seekers in action. A poor young girl, no older than 6, had been ratted out by some neighbours who believed they were making Demacia a better place, who could do some light water magic. The mage seekers broke down the door to her family's home and dragged her out, kicking and screaming. Her parents tried to stop, and her mother was arrested for "aiding and abetting threats to the kingdom". Her father, a cripple, was left with three children - including an infant. Years later Orlian looked into this case using the Edessa family's records, and found the girl had died the next day - the cause of death was left out of the report. He never found out what happened to the mother.   An orphan who had lost his parents to the endless search for glory, who had seen countless lives lost 'for king and country' and countless good people treated like dirt for something they clearly had no control over, resentment began buliding in his heart - and by his teenage years it had blossomed into hate. So while he maintained the facade of a good, loyal demacian noble, he wanted nothing more than to see the fall of the kingdom and all those he complicit in it's crimes.   In his studies, he became facinated with Demacia's eternal rival - Noxus. The warbands being allowed to specialize themselves instead of conforming and the nation's general focus on strength of all kinds intruiged him, but most of all he admired the fact that anyone - regardless of birth - could climb the ranks. Though it was not the lessons his teachers intended, he started to view Darius, the hand of Noxus himself, as a hero. When the Trifarix was declared his loyalties were sealed - he was ready to defect.   Still, he had no idea how to do it. Would Noxus even accept him? He maintained his facade but it became increasingly bothersome, until one particularly boring ball took a sudden turn for the better when he met Serine Edessa. It was love at first sight, and because of her he forgot the grand machinations of the world and focused on just being a teenager. He would sneak out to see her, reveling in the secrecy, and it was with mixed feelings he received the news from his uncle. He was to propose. Their relationship would no longer be secret, but that meant it was no longer separate from his moral dillemas. Still, he truly loved Serine, and kept playing his part for her sake.   The first surprise came at a completely normal day. He was having tea with Serine and she was complaining about something, the whos and whys have faded from memory, but what stood out to him was how her hair raised, her eyes seemed to glow, and when he held her hand he was shocked. The second was when a new novel had been released and her favourite character died. He was beside her as she read, and saw the bolts of lightning that followed the book as she chucked it across the room. He started paying attention, and noticed all these tiny things happening around her. Realization dawned on him - she was a mage. He tried discussing mages with her, how some people are mageborn without realizing, how not all mages are evil, but it just seemed to annoy her as she replied with mage seeker propaganda. In fact, all her opinions on anything political were just propganda someone else had taught her, she was devoid of critical thinking. Orlian began pitying her, seeing her as a victim of her circumstances and proof of how broken Demacia is. In Noxus she could have been great, with how her magic was slipping through constantly she had to be at least semi-powerful.   Noxus started growing in his mind, and when he was informed of his upcoming mission he decided it was time. He could not stand his facade, could not take another day in this rotten kingdom. He stole important military intel and said goodbye to Serine - the one thing that had kept him in Demacia for so long, and left. He ensured he would be reported dead and given a new life in the Noxian army, fighting to free the people of Demacia - and his love.
