Amber Museum

"The museum is the best place in the Red Desert. Actually, I'd go as far as to say that it is the best place on the continent. Where else would I go to learn about potential enemies and allies?"
— Lady Irana, president of Naskaya
The Amber Museum was set up a while after the Ice Age to quickly thaw everything that was frozen during that time. The museum is not just one building anymore, having been rebuilt quite a few times after the owners realised that so many people, animals and objects were frozen.   Located on the outskirts of Naskaya, the museum is a place for people who were recently thawed to get updated on the past and counselling so they are ready for the changed world. It is also a place to study any artefacts that archaeologists have recovered, as they are clues to the past. Because of this, the Amber Museum is considered one of the most important places in Dankar. Even nations try to form alliances with it, to get insider knowledge on which civilisations, empires and kingdoms have recently been thawed, and what that means for the country.

Buildings

The Amber Museum

The museum is the part that people enter when they visit the place. The first thing that visitors will notice are the walls, which are decorated with artwork of different ancient cultures. There are glass boxes in the waiting area, containing a small selection of artefacts and a small excerpt underneath them.   If visitors go further into the museum, they will find it is arranged in timeline order, from the most recent discoveries to the most ancient. The reason for this is not actually for touristic reasons, but because the museum is connected to the next section of the area - the Amber area. Once the thawed people have relaxed and feel at ease, they are taken through the museum as an easier way to digest Dankar's progress since they were frozen.

The Amber Building

"The whole thing felt like a second, you know. One minute you are in snow, and the next you are in a room. It's actually really scary. Luckily, the therapist who was with me was very kind and reunited me with an old friend. Unfortunately, they couldn't find my family. And the country I had grown up in had gone.
Faysal Qaderi, on his past
Behind the museum is a smaller building known as the Amber building. This is where the thawing happens. The building is heavily restricted, to avoid causing any distress or disturbances to the people who were just thawed. The museum will send out teams of archaeologists to recover blocks of ice containing people, items, relics and more. Once the blocks are brought back to the museum, they are placed in small, heated rooms that usually remain closed. These rooms are insulated and lined with amber, a material known for its warming properties. The ice blocks are usually removed within a day or two, as all the ice will have melted. But sometimes, they can stay in the rooms for up to a week.   Any objects that have thawed are given to the archaeologists, scientists and scholars to investigate. The people who were thawed are directed to another room where they meet with a small team of psychologists, historians and other specialists, to check up on them and provide them with information on how to navigate the modern world. If any friends or family can be found, they are brought into the Amber Building to reunite with the person.

History

The Initial Building

When the ice began to melt after the Ice Age, many civilisations were immediately thawed and soon returned to their normal lives. However, many more spent the rest of their lives finding friends and family and rebuilding what was lost. One man had lost his entire nation, and spent the first part of their return in anguish. However, he soon realised that others were feeling the same and built a small building to thaw any frozen people. He didn't want anyone else to suffer like him, and he was sure that he could find his family if he could melt the ice.   The first few people he thawed were very grateful to him, and offered to help him thaw others. When they realised the amount of people that were still frozen, they knocked down part of the building and rebuilt it, lining it with the amber they found in the Red Desert. This building was later called the Amber Building.

The Museum

As more ice blocks were melted over the decades, people from across the world came to work in the building as they wanted to meet the thawed people. Archaeologists wanted to study the old relics and historians wanted testemonies. So the owners built a second building to display the artefacts and allow everyone to meet the recently thawed.   Both buildings were continuously upgraded as more information came to light and more blocks of ice needed to melt. People who had nowhere else to go stayed and worked in the second building, the museum, or the Amber Building. Other staff members were travellers and adventurers from all over the world. Some people managed to thaw their loved ones, while others never found theirs. The original creator of the building was one of them, as the nation had been destroyed. But he spent the rest of his life helping others reconnect with their culture and families.

"There have been a lot more nation leaders coming here than in recent years. It's putting off all the visitors."   "Perhaps they're worried about the Emperor's return."
— Two museum staff
The museum contains another small area, which was recently built and slightly more modern. This is for any officials from nations across the world to meet with archaeologists and historians to discuss any recent developments. They will usually want to know if any leaders of the old nations were thawed, in case they are a threat to the peace in their region. So far, none of them are, and some have proven to be good allies. But the nations in the Red Desert are anxiously awaiting for the moment the Emperor is thawed, because he will almost certainly want to rebuild his empire from scratch, and threaten the peace in the Red Desert region.
