Wessex is a great kingdom, currently ruled by Ine, a warrior and lawmaker. It is currently the most powerful of the three great realms, having eclipsed Northumbria, but it is falling under the shadow of the growing power of Mercia Ine came to the throne after a brief period of conflict following the death of Caedwalla. He is well matched in ambition and ruthlessness by his queen Æthelburg. Together, they have been strong patrons of the Church, which has in turn supported Ine's rule of his territories. Ine has further solidified his rule through the creation of a great Codex of Law, which both stabilized the laws practiced across his realm and extended his authority as king. Still, Ine has had to put down numerous rebellions, the most recent of which necessitated the burning of his settlement at Taunton by Æthelburg. His kingdom is further plagued by territorial squabbling with Mercia to the north and attempts by the displaced Cymbrian princes of Dumnonia to regain their lands, aided by the men of Kerniu and supported by the Dragon Queen of Gwynedd.
