Tariq & The Selkie
This is a translation of a verbal story of the people of Egme, passed down from several generations prior. Written and translated by Salvador Goo'gel, 1192AC.
Hey, my friends! Gather round the fire, for I have a tale to be told all about the Selkie's Basin, the cursed lake on the edge of the Nymphwood Forest, where the ruin of White Hallow still lies dormant, or not? The people of the town had always been afraid of Selkie's Basin, for they knew the stories of the cursed lake and the twisted and mischevious spirit that lived within it. One day, a brave hunter by the name of Tariq decided to journey past the lake and into the woods to hunt for food. Upon his return, as he passed the lake again, he saw a beautiful woman bathing in the waters. He approached her cautiously but she vanished beneath the surface, leaving a shimmering pelt of fur on the lake shore. Tariq couldn't find the woman, so he took the pelt back to the village and he was hailed a hero. However, despite all of the celebration and good tidings, all was not well. The woman appeared to Tariq in a dream that night, demanding the return of the pelt. He refused, and the woman cursed both him and village. The lake turned black and foul, and the trees around the village withered and died. The people of White Hallow were forced to flee, leaving behind their homes and way of life. To this day, the lake is said to be haunted by the tortured ghost of Tariq and the spirit of the woman, known as the Selkie, who seeks revenge on those who have wronged her.
