Voiceless Fields
Just west of the sand swept peaks and to the north of the kingdom of Liwull you’ll find an area of the map noted as the voiceless fields. An old battle worn landscape in which an eerie silence persists across land and voices last through time. Many arcanists and scholars alike have spent time trying to gain an understanding as to why the fields work in the way that they do.
Over the years they have found a few things. Firstly, when speaking adventurers who have dared explore the voiceless expanses to find the artifacts scattered within the region, they have all said one thing. You are unable to speak while there, you make the motions and think you’ll say something but no words come out. When the wind blows and the scattered dead trees should rustle there is nothing but silence. No logical sound can be found. This presents challenges for arcanists who seek to cast spells with verbal components as they need to find a way to speak. One group has found a way to seemingly reverse the effect of the silence in an extremely localized region but to do that means inviting all the sounds of the past in which is simply maddening. Adventures say that they will occasionally hear a voice or another sound while out there, sometimes it’s in a language they know, sometimes not, sometimes it’s the sound of battles, sometimes the sounds of nature. It is believed that the sounds spoken get thrust out to reverberate until they are heard at some point in the future, but this temporal shift of sound seems to be random.
It seems that telepathic means of communication still work which is what most use while they explore the expanses. A group known as the Growling Guards effectively reverse engineered the silence spell to allow casters to use their magic in the region. This however invites all sounds from the past to the user's ears and slowly drives them mad with the cacophony. The Growling Guards have spent recent years exploring a few of the Dun Mar ruins that exist in the voiceless fields and have found evidence of large battles during the Cladeon which took place here.
If you are to adventure in this region it is best you be on your guard at all times since you can’t hear creatures around you, and unless you choose to invite the maddening voices of the past in then you may be short handed in your magical abilities to confront the creatures which call this quiet place home.
