Siggi’s Viking Marauders
That was until a legendary shield maiden gave her life to save the entire northern part of the continent. United under her banner, the peace her sacrifice wrought encouraged trade and expansion south. To kill a fellow Northerner is taboo and punishable by blood eagle.
The tribe of Siggi is somewhat segmented and spread out. Once every once in a while the chiefs gather and agree what the policies will be for the following year.
At the same gathering the young men are tried and accepted as a grown man/warrior, which in turn allows him to venture on "Vikings" and earn his own fame and fortune. At the same time the man (warrior) is allowed to claim his own shield maiden, be that either as part of a political allegiance or a "voluntarily" bond.
There are certain traditions to be upheld during this bonding, the shield maiden's family may object to the bond between a young warrior and the daughter, it has happened that both the young new warrior was killed during this encounter or the daughter lost her brother or father to her new bond.
Between the make of the warrior and his shield maiden and countless bonds, it happens a shield maiden will never follow her bond into battle or on "vikings" ever in her life. Sometimes under the conditions of a slightly less than a voluntary bond between warrior and shield maiden, it happens a warrior loses his life.
