The bound and gagged figure is Coal, a defiant cultist of the Silent Clan. A bloodied piece of yellowing cloth is bound atop his patches of stubble, beard, and cracked lips. Once he realizes who they are, Coal doesn't want to help the characters and gladly accepts death if given the option.

Visually, Coal is 38, a frowning human male with scarred tan skin, bags under his eyes, and short black hair with patches missing. He glares at the party with wide unfocused eyes, and a set of cracked glasses is visible on his shirt pocket.

Personal history

Coal used to work in the mines far to the south in an elf-run internment camp - a mithral quarry called the Gracious Bounty ("E Ra Alma" in Elvish). He can still remember the horrible, inhumane conditions which he and the other slaves worked. Coal claims that he helped a human named Sil'Yal of Strathmann, who was too weak to work, and that Sil'Yal was a hidden agent of the group called the Silent Clan. Sil'Yal recovered and used the clan's influence over the other slaves to escape, taking Coal with him. Coal always wondered what was beyond death and found the answer through the Silent Clan. He is loyal and believes he's doing the right thing. In his mind, the world is wicked and needs to be erased so that suffering can end. He cannot be convinced otherwise. The Silent Clan are the followers of the Silent One. They wish to see the Unborn God awaken and end all suffering.
