Metallic Dragons
The forge gods created the first metallic dragons out of chromatic dragons, shortly after the origins of dragons during the Sundering. They intended to convert all dragons to this form, but a group of nine chromatic dragons stole the artifacts of dragonforging and closed the Material Plane off from the gods to preserve their freedom.
Like their chromatic cousins, the Curse has forced the metallic dragons to gather at the Throne of Wings in order to raise their young, since eggs laid anywhere else either die or produce warped, lesser dragonkin.
VARIANT: DRAGONS AS INNATE SPELLCASTERS
Dragons are innately magical creatures that can master a few spells as they age, using this variant.
A young or older dragon can innately cast a number of spells equal to its Charisma modifier. Each spell can be cast once per day, requiring no material components, and the spell's level can be no higher than 1/3 the dragon's CR (rounded down). The dragon's bonus to hit with spell attacks is equal to its proficiency bonus + its Charisma bonus. The dragon's spell save DC equals 8 + its proficiency bonus + its Charisma modifier.
Elemental Affinity.
When a dragon casts a spell that deals damage of the same type as their breath weapon, they can add their Charisma modifier to one damage roll of that spell.
