Rank in the Gauntlet is required in order to participate as a Citizen (everyone else is a Helot). To establish rank, you must earn or buy your own arms, armor, and uniform and succeed on an rigorous entrance exam. All members of the Gauntlet are empowered by (and accountable to) the Church of St. Cuthbert.
