Isola
Isola is the citadel and tower of Edan at the center of the windswept, sun-blasted badlands of central Yfel. It lies next to and above the underground Drow Elvirim city, Isolabirre. The featureless black stone tower rises over 150 feet (45 meters) above the surface. At the base of the tower on the west side is the Isolabirre fortress; its north and south gates are the only entrances to the underground city.
Purpose / Function
Isola is the tower, citadel, and residence of Edan, probably the single most powerful Magus on Derkomai, a necromancer, thaumaturge, and diviner of unsurpassed abilities. Though Isola serves as Edan's fortress home, it also serves to protect others from Edan, as it (as its name indicates) isolates him from others that might be destroyed by one of his frequent outbursts of angry power.
Architecture
The round tower of Isola rises over 150 feet (45 meters) above the surface of the Yfel badlands. It is slightly tapered inward from its base, which is about 50 (15.25 meters) feet in diameter. It is constructed from heavy blocks of black basalt quarried from the Scorpion's Tail Range. The roof of the tower comes to a point and is tiled with thick slabs of greenish-black slate.
At the base of the Isola tower is the squat, blocky surface fortress of Isolabirre. Also constructed of black basalt, it contains the cells and dungeons of the over 10,000 non-Drow Elvirim slaves that work in Isolabirre. The fortress has two gates, one on the north side, held by House Zaquarn, and one on the south side, held by House Alierma. Just inside the two gates are stairways leading down into the underground city. They are the only two entrances into Isolabirre.
The only entrance into the Isola tower is through a stairway within the compound of House Zaquarn in the Upper Chambers of Isolabirre. The stairway is behind a great locked gate. Only the Interface, Sazzok Tygowriat'Zaquarn, Tygowriat of House Zaquarn holds the key to that gate, and she is the only mortal being allowed to enter Isola. However, even she rarely enters unless summoned.
Defenses
Isola has no defenses. None are needed. It is the dwelling of Edan, the Yfeljang.
History
Isola was constructed over 5000 years ago by the Drow Elvirim atop their great underground city as a dwelling (and protection for themselves) for their god-king, the Yfeljang Edan.
