General Summary
Campaign starts some weeks after the group came together (rescue of Mert from Amrik Vanthampur who tried to rape her; Athanatos got revived and got an infernal calling to travel to Baldur’s Gate to rescue Mert; he recruited Soran and Jo to find Mert which works surprisingly well. Barakas gets involved in the nasty business by accident.
They find Mert at the Low Lantern (tavern in an old ship run by Amrik Vanthampur) where they can rescue her/him from Amrik. Amrik gets killed in the process.
The group has to hide from now on (they use a safehouse at the docks).
In the meantime plenty refugees from Elturel arrived. They claim that the city just vanished. After some time, the gates of Baldur’s Gate were shut to not allow more refugees to enter the city. Luckily, this distracted people from the nasty business with Amrik which was big news before in the city.
After some time, the group gets kicked out of the safehouse since they ran out of money.
Group is hired by the Flaming Fists (city guards). Captain Darmin Zodge at the East Gate recruits them after the group witnesses how the Flaming Fists crush an uprise of refugees (with brutal violence). Zodge offers the group 200 gp if they deal with a cult called “cult of dead three” (referring to the dead evil gods Bane, Myrkul and Baal). The cult apparently abducted people in the city and killed them. Zodge asks the group to check with Matkina at the Elfsong tavern who is his contact there. Athanatos manages to raise the reward to 240 gp and the groups gets the copper badges of the Flaming Fists (indicating that they now act on behalf of the local authority).
Elfsong tavern is named after an elven ghosts which from time to time haunts the tavern, thereby singing, which is the main attraction of the building. The tavern is guarded by ogres. The group enters and finds Matkina upstairs. The group discusses with her the conditions on which she might help the group: She has had problems with a pirate called Deadeye who stole her ship. He is apparently on his way here and wants to kill her. The group should protect her and kill Deadeye, then Matkina would tell the group about the cult. The group agrees. After some time, Deadeye shows up with some goons. Luckily, Mert can cause a distraction downstairs so that the group only has to face few enemies at a time. Also, the group convicted a merfolk woman called Shanice to help them. However, she unfortunately needs too much time to prepare herself so she eventually does not help (she still needed to put on make-up). The battle is short and fierce. Matkina gets knocked unconscious. Luckily, the group can heal her. Deadeye tries to flee by jumping out of the window. Soran can follow him and eventually kills him on the streets. The situation is resolved and by the virtue of their Flaming Fist copper badges the group can stop the situation from further escalation.
After her rescue, Matkina tells the group that the cultists operate from a bath house which belongs to the Vanthampur family. There seems to be a secret passage that leads to the sewers (where she suspects the headquarter of the cult). Thereafter, she leaves Baldur’s Gate.
