Basic Information
Anatomy
The Aree is a large dragonoid with four legs, a long neck and tail, and vast leathery wings. Its spine runs all the way down from the base of its skull to the end of its tail, and it has bones extending from its shoulders to form the frame of its wings. Its claws, also, are considered part of its skeleton.
Biological Traits
Aree generally live for about a century, though longer lifespans have been seen. They're always ginormous, averaging about 55 feet in length and nearly 3,000 pounds.
Genetics and Reproduction
Aree mate in seasons. They take a single mate for each mating season, which occurs in late spring/early summer. A female Aree will generally lay between one and five eggs per mating season. After the eggs have been laid, the mother will stay in the nest for about a month to watch over them while the father hunts, provides food for the mother, and defends the nest. This distribution of duty continues for two months after the eggs hatch, while the babies are considered too young to fend for themselves.
Growth Rate & Stages
A baby Aree hatches after about a month in its egg, then spends two months in the nest with its mother and any siblings who have hatched around the same time. It spends this first month building relationships with its mother and siblings, or its clan, then spends the second month learning to hunt with its father so that it can leave the nest and fend for itself. During these two months of childhood, the Aree grows from about two and a half feet in length to about six feet in length.
After leaving the nest, the Aree continues to mature and grow. It will grow about two feet per year after its first initial growth spurt and won't max out until it's reached about 50 feet long (at about age 22).
Ecology and Habitats
Aree prefer high elevations in hot, arid climates. They're found primarily in The Teraki Mountains and in other nearby mountains. They prefer to make their nests in natural caves, when they can find them big enough. Their hunting grounds, however, include the desert plains, where their vision is less obstructed by mountains and crags.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Aree are carnivores who primarily eat antelope, mountain goats, and griffins. They've also been known to eat large cats such as tigers, leopards, and lions. They have a distaste, however, for both Osher and Caeseus.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
If Aree scales are found, they're supposed to be turned in to the Teraki government for use in rare Aree armor. However, they're sometimes hoarded to be sold on the black market for a sizable profit.
Scales are the only resources gathered from Aree, however, due to the fact that no others are relinquished peacefully.
Facial characteristics
They have sharp faces with an intensely arched brow and slitted eyes. They have a full mouth of sharp, lion-like teeth.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
They're found primarily in the Teraki mountains and other nearby mountains.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Aree can see clearly about ten times as far as humans and thus can spot and track prey such as antelope and griffins from a distance of more than two miles.
