Cảnova
Demographics
Virilia avoids unnecessary contact with outside cultures, for the most part, but in Cảnova the rules are slightly more lax. While probably 85% of the population is still Virilen, there are some outsiders mixed in. The second most common ethnicity is Sacharan, composing 10% of the population due to a past of slavery in Virilia. The remaining 5% is a combination of Osanaran, Rasellan, Teraki, and even a few Eilisian.
Many of the citizens of Cảnova are craftsmen and merchants, seeing as the city is a trade hub. Weavers, calligraphers, potters, painters, glass blowers, and animal keepers are particularly common among craftsmen.
Most Cảnovans are in the upper or upper middle classes, but there are parts of the city--frequently glossed over by those more fortunate--where things are much less polished and the lower class citizens live in poor conditions.
Government
All upper- and middle-class citizens are charged a 30% tax on their income, half of which goes to the city of Cảnova and the other half of which goes directly to the emperor.
Industry & Trade
Virilia is the top manufacturer of baskets, rugs, tapestries, artwork, pottery, glassworks, and similar artistic products in its corner of the world. It also exports some of its wildlife, including miniature dragons, carambola fruit, limes, plums, and peaches. Rice is another common export. All of these products come into Cảnova from across Virilia and find their way across the sea from Cảnova's harbors.
Virilia's architects and merchants are also often from Cảnova and dispatched to different parts of Virilia when they're needed.
The city's center is a giant open-air marketplace where Virilians from all over can come to sell their products or, in rare instances, services. This market produces additional income for the empire through the 90 dôkèn selling fee.
