Shared customary codes and values
The Naftin believe in the power and importance of the ocean and most live their entire lives on ships. It causes a Naftin great anxiety to not be able to see the ocean, which leads to their only land settlements being built high instead of broad on small islands where the ocean can be seen in any direction.
Common Dress code
Most Naftin wear loose, relatively thin clothes that will dry out quickly if they get wet.
Funerary and Memorial customs
Dying on land is dishonorable, and the elderly are even carried onto ships in their last days/hours, if need be, so that they can die at sea. Bodies are thrown overboard so that the deceased’s spirit can roam the seas for eternity. (There may be a certain sacred site or two that are especially desirable for this use.)
Enemy dead, however, are sealed in underwater crypts so their spirits are eternally trapped, and measures are taken when a new body is added to ensure that no previous spirits escape in the process. When dealing with the dead of cultures who don’t consider burying their dead especially honorable, an alternative is to bury the body and seal their soul in the ground.
Common Taboos
Dying on land, burial, living on a sizable continent.
Common Myths and Legends
Sea foam is believed to represent the souls of the dead, and storms are believed to be caused by mariner spirits battling one another.
