An explanation of magic
How Magic Works
Magic in the ruins is slightly different from other realms. Spells have the same effects, but how spells are casted is not the same. Because of the asteroid impact millions of years ago, trillions of tiny crystals are now in the air of the world. Certain types of these crystals are used for certain spells, and they are configured in such a way by spellcasters as to make effects, similar to runes or glyphs, but in microscopic form. This arrangement of crystals in a certain manner creates a pattern in the air that is different for each spell. Spellcasters are able to attune to and sense these crystals within the air, and it is similar enough to the weave that wizards from other realms can adjust relatively quickly and vice versa.
Places of dead magic are places that have been, for one reason or another, removed of their crystals. Some spells destroy types of crystals, such as water based spell crystals destroying fire based crystals if they are used in a spell, whereas normally they would coexist. This means that, after enough time and through the right spells, certain areas can be purged of the ability to cast certain types of spells. For example, some cities are so full of abjuration magic that evokers have a much harder time casting spells, though not usually enough to prevent a spell from being casted. Sometimes, antimagic will destroy crystals, but only after a prolonged period of time, otherwise, it simply freezes them in place so a spell cannot be finished. Some places, such as the deepest of the layers, have not had the crystals pierce their depths, making magic function oddly, or not at all.
The Core sites of Magic
There are three core sites of magic that exist in the world, each of which has been previously touched on, but will be touched upon further here.
The great crater: the great crater is where magic was originally created, and as such, it is easy for magic to work here. Those born near here almost always have some form of magic, and next to all of the finest spellcasters are raised here. Some parents with money deliberately bring their children there to teach them how to wield magic. Many magic items are crafted here, as it is easiest. It is deeply sacred to spellcasters. The newest crystals pass through here before spreading out to the rest of the world, a sort of training ground for them to see if any of the crystals are too weak to be used in real spells. This place is seen as the beginning of magic, and maybe even the beginning of the world itself, as the crystals may have been what made life in the first place. The Magic layer: The magic layer was once a layer of normal caves, but when the asteroid struck, it came to rest in these caverns. The stone now resides here, creating new crystals to replace those destroyed by certain spells. It has imbued the layer with incredible magic, with new arcane creatures that can scarcely be imagined. It is thought that the finest spellcasters have a special connection to this place, going there to meditate and study on theories of magic. As such, it is important to magic, but magic would still work for a few decades before ceasing to function without it. This site is the present of magic, as without it, magic would become a distant memory, but while it functions, magic lives on. Faerie Falls: only a select few know where the falls is, and for good reason. The crystals here are exceedingly rare, and may come from an entirely different stone, as they exist nowhere else and don’t regenerate. As such, it is heavily defended by monks and trusted spellcasters. The falls have crystals that allow for the best warping of time and space. Because of this, conjurers and divination wizards are especially drawn to here. Some old tales tell that if the special crystals are gone for long enough from this site, the clock of the world, the very thing keeping time moving, would stop, causing the world to die. This site is also a sort of healing site for broken crystals. Those crystals not fully destroyed, only wounded, wind up here to bathe in the falls, regenerating them. This power was used to imbue the ultra weapons with their power.
