Konos

Known by more poetic sorts as the Isle of Songs, or the Island of Songwinds, Konos is a sizable island nation that can seem rather far away from the troubles of the world, making it an incredibly popular vacation spot if you can afford it. The island itself has no original inhabitants, and trade routes circled its vicinity but never brought anyone close enough to let an errant spyglass spot the white sand beaches and lush jungles that cover the island's surface. That is until the 9th era when the nation of Hobrecit attempted to establish a series of outposts and small port towns throughout the region.   This would spell the doom of Hobrecit, as its efforts simply drew the attention of larger nations that eventually strangled it into non-existence. Its scouting reports, however, revealed the island of Konos and an opportunity for those that were being chewed up by wars and persecution across the globe. In 662 of the 3rd chapter of the 9th era, a galleon containing a motley collection of refugees, explorers, apostates, and expatriates anchored off the coast of Konos for the first time.   They quickly set to work constructing the buildings that would eventually become the main settlement, and exploring the corners of their new home. They found an abundance of resources off of which they could survive. Fruit-bearing trees and wide streams teaming with water-life (mainly a thread of freshwater octopi and several kinds of large bottom-feeding fish.) provided food, eventually being supplemented with vegetables imported by later groups of colonists. Their staple crop is a species of fast-growing bamboo, of which they harvest new shoots and fry them in palm oil.   At the center of the large island, is a series of volcanic mountains that spike up towards the sky. Large, though they don't form a chain, the mountains are rather impassable due to how sheer their sides are as well as the incredibly thick vegetation of the inner island that clings to it. Luckily, the Konosic people have no interest in traversing them, other than the odd daredevil, and instead have tunneled deep within them to get at their silver hearts. Konos is one of the largest exporters of silver in the world, as well as silver jewelry fitted with pearls pulled from the mouths of Glassclams.   Interestingly, the colonists found no form of indigenous life, nor signs that it ever existed on the island. That being said, the one sign they did find is the many species of clearly being spun by a god's hands. The aforementioned Glassclams and a species of songbird known as Skykite (which inhabit most of the island, and are the size of large eagles), are good examples. Despite this evidence, it's unclear if these species were created on the island itself, or simply were brought/migrated to the location.   This lack of resistance has greatly aided them, allowing the people to flourish across their home.

Culture

The Konosic people are energetic, and known the world over as socialites of the highest order.    Every night there are revelries to be found in every other house. A hundred Fevara shining in the night, and the food and drink flow in equal measure.

History

Soon after the founding of the country, there were a great many questions to be answered by its people.    What their goal was in the island. What they'd do to rule themselves. How they'd enforce any rules made in the colony.   Surprisingly, the questions were relative non-issues for the majority of the population. In a series of conferences, they codified these answers in a series of documents that are on display in the nations capital building, known unofficially as the twelve charters.    However, there was (and still is) a group that was unhappy with the charters that were agreed upon. This small group thought that Konos would be the perfect base for fermenting revolution, as anarchy was their agenda. In their eyes, the island would act as the home of the downfall of empires. They tried to impose their will upon the rest through demonstrations, riots, and in the end, attacks. They were wildly unsuccessful.    The majority of the colonists found their anarchist ideals foolish, if not abhorrent in their entirety. These folks banded together and clashed with the anarchists. In increasingly brutal skirmishes, the anarchists were driven from the newborn cities and towns.    Currently, their sparse numbers live deep in the jungles in small enclaves, harboring decades-old grudges and gnashing their teeth at the ghosts of the past.
