Meskhenet's Mirror

Ostensibly, Meskhenet's Mirror is simply a lake. 
A remarkably still lake, that one could easily admire ones own reflection in it until all of time passes away. 
And many have. 
The story goes the Meskhenet's Mirror was created by a goddess of both knowledge and beauty, who constructed her lab to float above the lakes surface so that no matter which way she turned she could check her reflection. Many tools and artifacts flowed from her lab, each more beautiful than the last, until one day she turned to the waters surface and found her reflection gone. Nowhere to be found. 
She searched and searched all around the lake, using every device at her disposal until she heard a song deep in the lake. Calling her. She locked herself away in her lab for a whole year and the tools stopped their flow. 
Once a year passed, without preamble, her lab collapsed into the lake and vanished. 
Ever since, those that gaze into the lake have fallen into a trance like that. Standing until nature, or brigands, or hunger take them to the afterlife. Even separated from the lake, they don't recover. It's like their mind is no longer there. Like they had received some great blow to the head.
