Fyronian

Name given to designate the major ethnicity of the Andellian Kingdom of Fyron. This nation of proud individuals claim their people's roots as the decendants of Emperor Galwyn's Dawnbringers, which occupy a prevalent place in the Fyronian national consciousness as the central figures of their myths and legends.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Pure, typical female names in Fyron finish with the letters A or E. Examples of female Fyronian names include Cassanra, Liana, Lianne, Eilane, Elayne, Diana, Diane, etc.

Masculine names

Typical male names in Fyron, like family names, tend to finish in "n" as well, the most common ending being -ian, -ien, -iin, -ion and -iun. The "-i" as third-last letter is particularly prevalent among the nobility. Examples of Fyroninan male names include: Andrion, Brennan, Eldrian, Gavin, Galwyn, Killian (first name), Rian, Samman, Tristen, Wreylan, etc. Names in the North of Fyron also take after the more Northern kingdoms and the names will finish in "d" or "t". Kerdaantite influences will lead to names finishing in "r".

Unisex names

In Fyron, these are names where a double consonant or lack thereof changes the sex of the name, the double consonants indicating a female name: Tristian/Tristiann, Roxan/Roxann, Galwyn/Galwynn, Rowyn/Rowynn, Killian/Killiann, etc.

Family names

Traditional Fyronian family names finish in "n" and do not usually use the letters X, Y or Z. Names are also bi- or tri-syllabic. Examples include: Aran, Barron, Falloren, Kerdovan, Tranden and Warrin. Other family names, such as "Smith" or "Baker" are used to denote a family's occupation.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The major languanges in Fyron are Fyronian and its dialects (Erguesian (a sub-dialect being Nadrassan) and Loguesan (a sub-dialect being Aldronian)), and, of course, the offshoot of Kerdaantite called Andellian Common.

Shared customary codes and values

Fyronians place a big emphasis on honour and frown on duplicity, and this bleeds both into how they act and how Fyron acts as a whole. Fyronians tend to be very direct and honest, which means that other ethnicities such as Lemayans don't like them as much. A Fyronian tends to live by the code of one acts the way they want to be treated; hence, if a native Fyronian offers to help another, it is culturally expected that the helped Fyronian will reciprocate when the time comes.

Common Etiquette rules

Greeting someone is done by hitting the right (or left if the right hand is occupied) closed fist to the stomach, upper left chest, mouth or forehead based on the relative rank of the person to one's self--for example, the King would greet a peasant by hitting his hand to his stomach, to which the peasant would reply by bowing and hitting his forhead with his fist. It is customary to seal deals by clasping the other person's forearm and looking at them in the eye (eye contact is very important to Fyronians). Fyronians drive, ride and walk on the left side of the road. When invited to a Fyronian household, it is custom for the guest to bring something to contribute to the meal, but the guest is not to help around the house. Eating with the fingers or eating loudly is considered rude. Burping or flatulation is also considered rude, as are references to other bodily functions. Showing an excessive amount of skin in men or women is considered to be indecent, as the climate makes Fyronians unnacustomed to seeing more skin than bare arms.

Common Dress code

Fyronians are used to extremely changing and capricious weather and will all dress in consequence, with many layers. Colour of clothing is either in browns, beiges, and shades of gray, with colours usually reflecting allegiances to fiefs and other organizations.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Fyronians believe in ghosts and believe that the spirits of the desceased must be released from their bodies by incineration. However, the spirits will not find rest if the person has suffered an unjust death (i.e. getting killed by a criminal), and so the injustice must be rectified by someone who remembers the deceased before there is no-one left to remember the deceased. However, it is to note that Fyronians must reestablish justice and not seek vengeance--therefore, if the deceased was murdered, the person bringing justice to the murderer must act within the law of the realm (if the penalty for murder is imprisonment, the murderer must be brought to the authorities and thrown in jail).

Common Taboos

Fyronians are notoriously prudish, which means that overly graphic depictions or mentions of sex is considered to be extremely embarassing. Fyronians view sex as a sacred, intimate and secret act between two lovers and tend to see explicit sex as voyeurism. In general, prudishness levels increase with the social position, peasants being much less prudish than Fyronian nobility.

Historical figures

Galwyn Dawnbringer and his Company of Dawnriders, among others.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Dark hair and dark eyes are a beauty ideal in most of Fyron, both for men and women. Currently, Fyron has enough to eat, so men and women are preferred strong but not overweight or skinny, which are both viewed as a form of physical weakness. Fyronian women tend to prefer men with more chiseled features (they view it as a reflection of mens' temperaments), but beards are the halmark of a true man. Fyronian me tend to prefer women with wide hips and firm breasts and a healthy complexion. Both sexes tend to prefer if the other sex's face is as unblemished as possible, and scars, freckles and broken noses are considered unnattractive.
