Currency Conversion
The standard coin on Hârn, which uses a single coin to handle its monetary system, is the silver penny (d). Most civilised states produce their own silver pennies. Wage on Hârn is paid in pennies (silver pieces also called a dram) though most commonly through barter. Most laborers average two to three pennies worth of work a day and therefore an average of sixty pennies a month.
Gold coins are rare and in the form of the Khuzan Crown, which most people will never see. Khuzan Crowns are worth one hundred pennies in elseworlds, they equate to one hundred pennies being worth one platinum piece. Copper isn't minted in Hârn, instead; the penny can be broken down into tenths, called farthings. One copper piece of elseworlds is worth one farthing. Electrum and platinum coins are not minted on Hârn at all.
To use the prices from the SRD, converting is just adding a 0 and calling it silver pennies.
For common currency, it may be important to know that a farthing is a silver penny divided (literally) into tenths; although it can be broken into four quarters or a half called a ha'penny (half penny). Shillings and pounds are not coins, merely quantities of silver pennies. A shilling is a form of counted penny, the quantity of which is ten pennies. In elseworlds, ten pennies are worth one gold piece.
The table below shows the conversion between Hârnic currency and the currency used in the SRD:
To equate this in modern terms, one Farthing or Copper Piece, is worth one USD.
Coin | cp | sp | gp | pp |
One Farthing/Copper (cp) | 1 | 1/10 | 1/100 | 1/1000 |
One Penny/Silver (sp) | 10 | 1 | 1/10 | 1/100 |
Shilling/Gold (gp) | 100 | 10 | 1 | 1/10 |
Khuzan Crown/Platinum (pp) | 1,000 | 100 | 10 | 1 |
