Jerusalem is lost to the Saracens under the sultan Saladin, prompting a Third Crusade and precipitating a split between the Priory de Sion and the Templars. The Priory, increasingly secretive, begins operating under other names, including “l’Ordre de la Rose-Croix” (later the Rosicrucians).
