Tremendous amounts of time, wealth and resources were invested in the Daedalus Project. After the first couple of years, a number of unmanned ships from around the world started traveling to Mars where they landed and became parts of huge settlements, ready to receive settlers.
The quarters for almost half a million people were completed when the Icarus Event took place.
What people didn’t realize at that time was that as the result of
the Lapse, newly formed electromagnetic fields gradually covered the globe, incapacitating all electronic equipment. What started as isolated glitches, turned into a massive failure of all transistor-based devices in the world.
On December 3rd, the Daedalus Project lost connection to its mainframe and all other systems coordinating the operation. All digital data related to the project was wiped out.
It didn’t take long to realize that no one was leaving the planet again. After the Icarus Event, no electronic devices were ever able to function again, sending the world back to a strictly mechanical era.
The colony on Mars remains intact as a ghost town to this day, waiting to welcome the residents who will never arrive.
