Planar Wellsprings

Whether it be from the chaotic wastes of Mulrich or the empirical lands, every plane harbors innate magical wellsprings that may be tapped into to create magical effects. Most believe that every creature is born connected to these wells in one way or another, and some may even know how to draw upon their power. Each well is an innate part of nature, life, and all that is formed in the world.   It is the major belief that the Wellspring has a part of the world's soul, and all beings in this world share it together. When a mortal is born, a small part of the Wellspring is naturally imbued into them, forming what many would consider a soul. Other, more powerful beings may use the waters of the wells to form creatures that may be of that plane, such as fiends or elemental beings that are not born in other ways.   The springs represent amplification and entropy. Creating anything pulls from the well whereas destroying something returns a part of the well back to itself. Some scholars wonder if that means that there is a maximum capacity to life in the world, wherein some day a wellspring will be tapped and all will be changed.   For now though, the Wellsprings remain, many guarded by beings that purely represent the elements that make up the wellspring they are connected to. It is questionable of whether these beings have an intelligence towards understanding their goals or what drives them to protect these places of power, but protect they do.   The wellsprings in this way are also the sources of all magic. A wizard must study drawing upon wellsprings to utilize them to draw its power and form the spells they cast. A sorcerer may be someone who walked within a wellspring and were overcome with its power, pulling upon the natural magic of life. Others draw upon the power of life which itself, draws upon the wellspring, tapping further into it.   The fact that someone such as an adventurer, may grow in such extreme power from their own soul and its limited amount of well energy has created different schools of thought.   Aristinists believe in an elite structure wherein some people hold more of the wellspring's power within their soul than others. This means that someone is more powerful simply because of who they are. An Aristinist believes that each type of creature does not have a set amount of the Wellspring within them, but an amount that differs per individual. As such, people who become powerful are tapping into an aspect of themselves they did not fully do so, but not everyone can accomplish such a feat. According to them, most people do not have enough Wellspring within them to accomplish things above the natural humanoid method, leading to high amounts of "simple folk."   Eckers believe that there is a set amount of Wellspring that each creature of the same type receives. Every humanoid receives the same amount of a Wellsprings power just as every dragon receives the same amount of a Wellsprings power. Some Eckers believe that this difference is even more distinct with different races also having a different set amount of Wellspring power. With everyone having the same amount of the Wellsprings strength within them, the way that people can grow in magical power is by becoming more attuned or further understanding the Wellspring power within them and growing it as they progress. This leads to those who follow the beliefs of the Eckers to not worry about the Wellsprings as a limited font of life as by the process of beings growing the Wellspring within them and dying, the Wellsprings are actually becoming more powerful.   Other schools of thought exist, some overlapping with the beliefs of these two stated here, but others being completely different. This is especially true for peoples who are disconnected from the rest of Divim in their own lands. These schools of thoughts refer mostly to thoughts that have been born of Sigil and passed along to others in this unifying city.   Whatever the case is about the way living beings are connected to the Wellspring, it is fact that they are connected to the lands around them, and spells come from them. Whether they truly are connected to life or not does not really affect the importance of the Wellsprings. They are a fundamental part of the world and teeming with extreme magical power. If the Wellsprings don't provide life, it is no matter, for it is the Wellsprings that control life.

Localization

The "heart" of a plane
In each of us, there is not a light or darkness. There is blood. There is sweat. There is a great power within us. That of the wellspring, flowing through us. In some, it flows as a rivulet through a craggy bluff, but in others, it is a torrent flowing from the highest of mountains to erode the earth beneath.
