The Cult of the Broken Chain

The Cult of the Broken Chain is an occult organization dedicated to freeing Tharizdun from its imprisonment in Pandemonium.

Divine Origins

When Tharizdun was banished to Pandemonium and its corporeal form segmented and sealed beneath Divostra, the Primordial Titans believed they had rid their world of a great evil, when in fact they had only stopped the immediate threat that was an Elder God attempting to unmake creation. Though buried, Tharizdun's influence continued to be felt throughout the millennia, through the Dracomachy, the Age of Fables, even after the Titans themselves were banished from the plane following the Titanomachy.   Mountains formed and oceans filled over the temples where Tharizdun had been sealed away. In time, cities were built near these lost structures and as civilizations grew, Tharizdun came to their citizens in visions and nightmares. Its malevolent influence is the spark that ignited the Age of Darkness, when several races were corrupted and waged war against their brothers and sisters, spawning new dark gods that plague the lands of Divostra to this day.   In modern times, a semi-organized cult has formed among people corrupted by Tharizdun's influence. Its followers have discovered that the god speaking to them in dreams is not dead, just bound beneath the earth by ancient forces. As such, they have begun to coordinate and seek out the temples where the seals are buried, searching for a way to unbind the imprisoned Elder God so it can return to Divostra and, in their mind, break the chains that bind the world.

Cosmological Views

Cultists worship Tharizdun as the "breaker of chains" and the "doom of tyrants." They believe it is the god of liberation and revolution, who will dethrone tyrants and create a new, egalitarian world for all.   They believe that Tharizdun gave the world knowledge, and for that the other gods, who jealously kept knowledge from mortal races, destroyed Tharizdun's corporeal form and sealed it away beneath Divostra.

Tenets of Faith

There is no organized dogma for the cult, though its members do share a few basic tenets:
  • The gods made the kings of this world, and therefore are the ultimate tyrants.
  • Kings may die, but so long as the gods have influence on the masses, no one can truly be free.
  • It is only by breaking the chains that bind the world that true liberation can be achieved.
  • Anything done in service of freeing Tharizdun is justified.
