Personal history

Magnum was, well in his mind still is, a critical part of his ship. Not just a member of the ships crew but he once played a vital role long ago in how the ships operated. Capable of feats of great memory and charting. Repairs. Diligent and always working. He was as much part of the ship as he was an individual.
And that showed. Over the long years his role became obsolete. Navigators, cheap ship labor, and just other advances saw his days as a critical part of the ship, let alone as a member of the crew, just distant memories. Instead hes spent years just remaining on the deck. Finding his bitter attitude at being replaced drove away any friends he might find in the crew, he found his solace in strange places. Never having left the ship his only friends became the animals of the ocean and rivers of his many travels. So unimportant was he to the ships crew that hed spend days, and entire journies motionless on the back deck just ignoring the sea water splashing against him. Algea, barnacles, and other sea life growing on his fake flesh and into a crusty shell where his sitting spot lay.
At least until he met a stowaway kobold and a captain who wanted to be rid of both unwanted passengers. Moe Boom and his explosions caused a great deal of damage to the ship, and the captain charged Magnum with the task of attempting to collect the damages in pay from the chaotic devil. Only for Moe to cause more damage in his attempted escape, driving Magnum to do what he'd never done before, leave the ship and take foot into the port for the first time in his memory.
