Beiro's Job
Entrance
- All innkeepers and tavern/drinking hall owners have heard rumors that Beiro Tiltathana is looking for adventurers or mercenaries for a job. If asked they can tell where is the Beiro's Manor next to Knight in the Morn.
- Once they enter the manor they will be greeted by Beiro's assistant Salthor tiefling. He has short, wavy, black hair and golden eyes. He has smooth red skin. He stands 167cm (5'5") tall and has a lean build. He has a square, common face. He is very patient. He takes everything at face-value. He likes to know how things work.
- He will ask what is they purpose and if they say they came for a job, he will leave them at the entrance with a waiting area containing of a couple of sofas.
- Once the party is waiting they will notice a softly sobbing well dressed high elf woman Theirastra passing in the hallway who doesn't notice them at first, but then quickly raises her head and stops once she sees them and seems distressed.
- If they try to interact with her she will approach them and ask if they are working for her husband and if they need anything. If they ignore her, she will quickly disappear into another room.
- If they ask why is she sobbing she will say that it's nothing and they shouldn't care about that.
- DC 15 persuasion/deception to get her talking more. Theirastra explains that it's because of her husband. He seems like a completely different person since a couple of months ago and been hurting her and their kids and she doesn't know what to do. He always had been a very good and honest man and loved in the community. He's a merchant selling jewelery and spices from Moonshae Isles across the sea. If they are sympathetic and offer help, she will ask if they could try to investigate who is maybe influencing him and could explain his recent behaviour. Since she noticed that he's been working more with weird people she doesn't trust. She's not sure what to else to do.
- If they try to ask more, Salthor will come back to the party with their quest. Theirastra once the assistant comes back will stop talking and will quickly disappear back to the hallway.
- Salthor will explain that Beiro has been looking for some adventurers to protect his shipment for a payment. Simple job, guard boxes at the docks for the night until they get picked up. The shipment will come in the day after tomorrow in the evening and will be picked up next morning. Beiro is offering 150 GP for the service.
- If they ask why them or why adventurers, Salthor could explain that Beiro had some issues with local mercenary guild as they are demaning too much of a high price for their services. And Mr. Beiro is a smart man and wants to prove that he doesn't need them.
- At sunset the party will be greeted at the docks by a worker Sam who just finished unloading all the crates. There are several crates that are stored under a tent on one of the piers. Sam introduces himself that he works for Beiro and asks if they are here to guard the shipment. And then bids them farewell and leaves them with the crates.
- Quickly as the sun sets and Hill's Edge although the market across the canal is closed for the day, you can still hear the town bustling. People going to inns and taverns for supper, others going home from work, and then some drunks as well. They also notice guards patrolling who yell to a drunk to stop pissing to the canal.
- Later a bit the streets quiet down and they can hear only a bit mumbling from inside the buildings.
- At night once the streets are silent party should roll perception vs. stealth Caelynn Nailo, Quinn Fenwick, Anastas Redstream (female human pickpocket), Gyleon Fordye (male lightfoot halfling pickpocket) Spy stats. If someone from the party rolls perception higher they notice them peaking from a corner. Quinn and Caelynn will be first to peak, and Quinn will recognise the party and will walk up to them.
- Quinn asks them what are they doing here, and if they work for Zhentarim. Caelynn will come out asking an explanation, and Quinn introduces them.
- Caelynn will explain that they have strong suspicions to believe that Beiro is helping Zhentarim. She will ask for them to open and see what's inside. They will find dynamite among spices.
- Quinn explains that their goal is to sabotage the shipment to troll Zhentarim and that they wouldn't trust Beiro anymore. He will show a flask of clear liquid. If the party does not intefere he will pour the liquid over the crates.
- Caelynn says that they might have a common goal - defeating Zhentarim. And invites them for dinner at The Worried Wyvern. She says that they have been struggling to find the base of Zhentarim in Hill's Edge, but she has a couple of ideas how to get to Zhentarim through Beiro.
- If the party goes back to Beiro's mansion to report on the shipment Salthor will greet them and give 150 GP for the service as agreed.
- The party notices Caelynn at a table at the back eating and she motions the party to come. She orders them drinks, and small talks that she hopes Zhentarim hasn't ruined their first impressions on Hill's Edge and if they are enjoying the city. And what brought them here.
- If party asks Caelynn more about the guild, she introduces a bit that they're one of the gears of the town. Inbetween the elite, mayor, mercenaries, Terrowin with his shipments, merchants, regular people, and us. And don't forget the poor. We provide some valuable goods cheaper to people, we lighten some pockets who seem to be weighty, not much. And sometimes we have information to sell. It's necessary to know a lot in this business.
- Caelynn explains that her team have been struggling to find Zhentarim base. They work in the shadows and hide their traces. But someone in the town must be helping them. And one of her smugglers found out that Beiro has been also smuggling dynamite and black powder covering shipments as if it was spices. So they believe he's helping Zhentarim. She has heard rumors about his family, but they didn't know a lot about him before. He seemed to be a simple honest merchant, never got into trouble. She believes that they could get to Zhentarim through Beiro and this is where she has a couple of ideas how to get the location of Zhentarim Hill's Edge base.
- Tomorrow there will be a private party at the merchant's guild and Beiro with his wife will participate.
One of the ideas is to infiltrate Beiro's mansion while he's gone and look for any documents, papers related to Zhentarim. He's a merchant he should have all the books and if he's cooperating with Zhentarim maybe even letters from them. Another idea would be to try infiltrate the private party itself. We could pretend to be servants serving wine or entertainers whatever you think of but not to cause any attention. We don't want any trouble with the merchants guild. We could try to eavesdrop on his conversations trying to get information that way. But theres's not guarantee that we will get anything new about Zhentarim.
- Caelynn will ask their opinions. If they all decide one plan she will ask if they need any help from them. If they split, Caelynn will suggest Quinn and her join both groups each.
- If they decide to infiltrate the mansion she'll say she has a rough map of the mansion that she can share so they would know where his study/bedroom is. Her team has already spied the mansion a bit from the outside. But she warns them to still be careful because some of the servants might still be at the mansion.
- If they decide to infiltrate the party she can suggest a contact who hires servants and entertainers for parties. They can try to pretend to be ones. But she warns them that they would need to look like them and leave their weapons at home not to cause any suspicion.
- Once more or less the plans is settled they can roll DC 16-18 perception if they can hear a bit of the conversation at the bar, above DC 10 only yelling. They can hear a low male voice saying "give me all the coins, now!"
If they approach the bar they see a man with a scarf on his nose and mouth with a hand crossbow pointed at the innkeeper, and 4 of his buddies with maces and all in leather. The one with the crossbow notices them and points the crossbow at them and quivering yells to stay where they are, "we don't want any trouble only the money". And points the crossbow back to the innkeeper.
- The bandits are locals youths that usually cause minor trouble. But they're trying to prove themselves to a new gang (Zhentarim) and think this will prove their worth for their ranks.
- DC 15 persuasion/deception/intimidation for the crossbow man to lower his weapon. DC 20 persuasion/deception/intimidation he will run away with his friends. If they try to talk, the innkeeper will join them saying if this is what their parents would want them to be.
- They won't attack the party unless they attack them.
- 1 Spy and 4 Thugs. 200+100x4=600x2=1200xp/ 1175xp hard 3x3lvl medium 1x5lvl.
- Loot: 16 GP, 19 CP, 23 CP, 16 CP, 21 CP.
